I have a project that has a double-sided stage. It's a school, so they have an auditorium on one side of the stage, and a drama classroom on the other side. There's a proscenium arch on both sides. Each side has its own console. I have a toplight wash on that stage, and I'm debating the channel numbering for that wash. ie: The way I would normally do it is number SR-SL, DS-US, so my toplight would be 21DSR, 22DSC, 23DSL, 24SR, 25C, 26SL, 27USR, 28USC, 29USL for example. The question is, when using the console on the other side should I renumber the fixtures so they go in reverse order, (so 21 is DSR from that perspective) or keep the channel numbers the same (so 21 is USL)? I can construct arguments for both approaches. Which is less likely to confuse, in your opinion?

The AHM32 should do it for you, right? 12x12 analog, and then 20x20 Dante with the optional card. The Dante card is almost as much as the AHM32, mind... I do like the QSC Cores, but the various licences do start to add up after a while - I think the AHM +Dante will still be cheaper than a 110f+IO8+Dante Licence. Do you need any ongoing control functionality, or will it be set and forget? A&H's control functions, while basic, are not licence-encumbered, and the touchscreens are way cheaper. There are various other DSPs that you could look at: Symetrix, Biamp, Digico 4Rea4*, maybe even Xilica if you want to cast a wider net. * = Which is flagrantly Allen & Heath dLive software in reality...

I find SQ to be terrific value. It's not the best mixer around, but it's clearly the best mixer at that price point. The Soundcraft offerings are almost universally disliked over here. The Midas and Presonus have their uses but are a Tier (or two..) below the SQ IMO. The Digico S21 isn't in the same budget ballpark, is it? I've always found the SQs to be significantly cheaper. (Looking at my super secret price lists... S21 is close to 2x the price of an SQ6.)

It's really mostly songs you know really well. There are a few "tricky ones" I use - for example I like "She Moves She" by Fourtet as it has a unusual syncopated sound that basically falls apart if any of your time alignment is off. But mainly it's because I know it really well.

The new Taipei Performing Arts Centre has back to back stages, with a removable wall, to make the mother of all Alley theatre layouts. Does anyone know of another building that has a similar layout and facility? The Lowry in Salford is close, but I think it has an intermediate room/wide corridor between the two, not a straight through. Acoustics would be a major challenge, of course... Just trying to find other precedents for this kind of layout.

A good Canadian company from Calgary. 🇨🇦😀 For OP: when we design systems to do this at work, we usually use an input node on the network. Sometimes it’s just a one port, up to 4 depending on the venue size. I often use the Pathport Unos for this. It’s easier than trying to get network addresses and so on to match up from the touring console, just chuck it out to DMX and back into the network. Also mitigates any security concerns about access to the network. I haven’t yet used the ELink router that Pathway make, but that’s another route you could take. It’s maybe more optimized for Professional venues, and priced to match.

Does anyone want to hazard a guess at how this product actually works?: https://zohms.com It claims to allow use of any speakers at all without worrying about impedance mismatch, essentially allowing the impedance to drop to effectively "zero ohms" and still working. It's not powered, totally passive. It's specifically not a 100v/70v system. What are they up to? The unpowered and "black box" nature of the product initially set off my snake oil detector, but they're being represented by reputable distributors (over here anyway) so I guess it does actually work....but how?

Something fun I found at a site inspection recently. The contractor, rather than ripping out this old Strand Pinpatch cabinet, instead just gutted it and used it as the box to mount the DMX Splitter, DMX/0-10v converters and the various relays for the project. It's actually a fairly nice piece of furniture when it comes down to it! The surface makes a pretty good lighting workbench...

And lets be clear here, the system in use wasn't really designed from the ground up by the UK Government, it's based heavily on WEA / CAP developed in the USA and used pretty much everywhere. (And, of course, its the cellphone networks that do most of the heavy lifting - as evidenced by Three messing it up the first time...)

It occurred to me today: Is there a clumsier product name than "powerCON TRUE1 TOP"? I can't think of one.

I used to live close to HFM Pyrotechnics when I was a kid. One time a friend of mine and I were taking a walk and spotted a small fire in the bin just outside the HFM building/yard. We called 999 from a payphone (yes, it was a long time ago, why do you ask?) who seemed mostly disinterested until they realized who occupied that address. Then we got 4 fire engines, lights and sirens, for a small bin fire... To be clear, the fire was unrelated to HFM's activities - in fact it was a Sunday so they were shut, but it was close enough to their premises that the fire brigade took it very seriously indeed.

I hope they do a better job of implementing this than they did in Canada. Here, for some reason, they chose not to implement different categories of alert, so every alert sent through the system is at the maximum level. That means 3am wakeups to sirens from your phone (that overrides the silent setting) for every missing child alert. The same noise that would accompany an incoming nuke. It’s not good for the blood pressure.

Hey all, A very good friend of mine from Vancouver is visiting London and the UK in May for several weeks. I wondered if anyone on here had the ability to setup a backstage tour for him at one (or more!) of your venues in London. He’s a Theatre Safety guy - but one of the cool practical ones, not your usual ‘Elf and Safties’ person. Does anyone here have a line on an interesting space they might be willing to help a friend of a friend? (You’re all my friends, right? 😉 )
