There was a basement nightclub fire in a Manchester at about 0:07 am 1/1/22 The blaze seems to start at the same time that sparkling "flares" were lit and this caused the helium balloons that covered the cealing to ignite. The fire developed rapidly, 170 evacuated 3 to hospital. Video of the incident can be seen here, it is a painfull watch https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/cctv-horrifying-deansgate-bar-fire-22621660

Painfull indeed, especially at the good effort to prevent it spreading.

You have to admire their completely psychopathic confidence in that "we shall pull through" when if I had my way "we" would be banged up to contemplate the folly of handing out flares to an alcohol fuelled crowd of numpties.

To be fair to most of the "numpties" study https://twitter.com/CarlosGarciaOBE/status/1477333473581047812?s=20  it now looks like https://twitter.com/CarlosGarciaOBE/status/1477333590727921664?s=20

And this is why in theatre we flambar everything that might be used near pyrotechnics or sources of ignition.

Nightclubs... I highly doubt it even occurred to them.

We need sparklers and balloons and streamers and stuff

I can get a hundred on Amazon for four quid, will that do?

Yeah get those

Procurement process complete

In a basement too! Darwin was certainly around that night. Thankfully he didn't win on this occasion...

is that still common?

I was in a relatively upscale hotel a couple of weeks before Christmas, running sound for a function band. The dance floor and stage area was at a dead end of the building, with two fire exits leading off. One remained locked for the duration of the event (the reason given, when I discovered it, was "people get in through it"). The other exit was almost entirely blocked by wheelie bins.
