Advice needed please, I want to get a psychedelic light effect but should I get an oil wheel lamp that take the 6” discs or should I get a projector that could play a video of the psychedelic effect . Thanks for any advice.

As Musht writes, in the early 90's your question was valid but since the collapse in price and enormous rise in clarity, power and lens choice in video projectors even home theatre ones are an improvement on the early "industrial" behemoths. Besides which why project a single effect when you can project a million of them via video?

Check out the work of Max Hattler and Noriku Okaku both with The Egg and without.

I did an "art thing" last year where they had a few ohp's (very old skool) plus a visualiser and video projector.

They used clock glasses which are slightly dished, filled with alcohol, oil, and maybe water? It was quite impressive but not massively bright so as to balance with the ohp's

First look for the stock video for suitable effects. I may have an Opti 250 -uncertain condition or discs, somewhere in the house. A while ago the discs were hugely collectable and expensive especially the polarised "movement" discs -care! some were hard porn dubious in the 70s definitely bad now.

plenty of items on Ebay.

Polarizers were extra dim:-)

Wheels still collectable, including all the Gogo bar specials :-),Orion, Pluto, Project as well as Optikinetics. Let`s be honest they are collectables, time moves on.

But the art of wheels ain`t dead

Take advantage of Amazon`s excellent return policy, if needed, this type was mentioned in a smaller projectors thread below, for couple of hundred quid get a couple, with change. Looking through reviews, almost anything on Amazon TBH, buying 2 at a time may entitle you for a direct cashback from the seller in return for a 5 star review ;-)

run something like this on a phone

only catch being relatively narrow beam, cover it with more than one projector within budget, use a `laser` style effects app on the phone.

Or a used ultra short throw , with a new lamp..., in budget , depends on mounting needs

It never was massively bright in the old days most of the time, it was just 'the thing'. Leaving aside video any modern projector will, I suspect, be an improvement on the rubbish we used back then - like the Aldis 1000. Most media attempts to recreate what live performance was really like day to day what is nearly 60 years later (they never fill the room with fag smoke for a start!) are as risible as any historian under fifty's TV attempts to tell me what the seventies were to live through.

4500 lumens. Really. For a penny under 80 quid. Yeah right.

Methinks boy racer measurements have crept in to light. more like 45 lumens in proper money!

I notice it changes to 4500 lux in the listing, then doesn't mention any units in the comparisons <_<

  • 1 year later...

I'm looking to try build my own oil wheel projector, but I want to make it compatible with the [OPTI]Kinetics 6inch wheels.
Can someone who has a complete rotator mechanism please measure and post the dimentions of this device?
Would be useful to know...
- width
- thickness
- position of aperture(centre) relative to bottom
- position of rotor shaft(centre) relative to bottom
Thanks in advance

Welcome to BR David and just a couple of tips.

It doesn't pay to tag new requests onto threads 18 months old, we call it thread necrophilia and additional new ones can get overlooked. Be brave, start your own topic.

Next, do a bit more work on your profile, my first response was "Buy one, they are cheap enough" then I thought "Ah, but he might be in darkest Borneo" but you don't say what part of the world you are in. Might sound pedantic but members currently posting are from the West Indies, the Antipodes, China, Sweden and WALES!

My best advice is still buy one and copy it if you must because they are probably cheaper to buy than to make a bespoke one-off. We used to build all sorts of kit like propellers and blanking discs but always started from a Solarsystem or single rotator and in fact used them as the quick way to build spinning screens and mirrors. Have a search for Opti rotators but also for the original Rank Aldis Tutor 2 rotators.

When I first signed up to BR in 2014 (after years of lurking) I got the impression that a fully completed profile was a condition of being accepted - apparently not (or at least not these days). Perhaps it should be? Discuss.

When I signed up to the Blue Room, keeping posts on topic was also part of the culture 😉
