not enough! ;)

Now, I'm a video guy, so I cant tell you much at all (sorry!)

LIGHTING

  • An old desk soon to be updated with a fancy new one (no fancy lights though)
  • Old(ish) lights

SOUND

  • Again, Old desk soon to be updated
  • 5 radio mics (bad condition) (one handheld)
  • 3 hanging mics
  • 2 floor mic

VIDEO

  • One Epson EMP-X5 projector (me thinks)
  • A nice big screen
  • Networked computer (on stage)
  • dvd player (and all the rest of the a/v system)
  • A huge VGA able to the balcony into a computer dedicated to screenmonkey

Now, compared to others its not much at all. However, I doesn't bother me too much. We are a public school that has a school show once a year with a few dance shows, talent shows etc. thrown in. We are provided with a great education, and that's what matters at this stage in my life. (Although a bit more kit would be nice :P)

Lighting-wise, my school (non-private) owns:

PAR64 x 8

SL 15/32 Profile x 8

650w Fresnel x 14

1200w Fresnel x 4

500w Cyc Flood x 8

2x LD90 dimmer racks (24 x 2.5kw dimmers each)

Strand 300 Series desk.

We're also lucky enough to have free access (within reason) to the stock of a local hire company when we need it, and we recently ran a rock-gig-type-thing-cum-disco with a load of extra PARs, 6 Martin Roboscan Pro 918s and 6 MAC 600s (and a hazer), using a Pearl 2008 desk.

Fairly cool. For us anyway.

Psychedelic Theatre

My strand tempuses run off 5A. B-) . Stupid really. And only about 14 of the 18 channels work. I am on the hunt for fuses and fuse holders, because they are discontinued.

I'm from Beaumont school in Hertfordshire, we've got decent kit for a school!

Lighting

2 Imove spots (moving heads)

2 following spotlights (date back to the 70's)

24 par 64 cans (most with C62 lamps)

8 source4 jr's (25 to 50)

1 acclaim zoom

24 general fresnels (12 selecom acclaim of an unknow type and 12 Quartets)

5 working cycs (well I say say working)

As for the older kit, we have some eggs, some eyeballs and plenty of box floods.

we have 2 desks, one very old that actually works a treat and a zero88 jester. which gets mixed reviews

as far as dimmers go we have 3 packs with 6 channels each but 2 plugs holes in each channel to give a total of 36 plugs.

Special effects

an ancient mirror ball

a relic of a smoke machine

almost new Hazer

I see that this topic hasn't been added to for a while, but I thought I'd chip in anyways.

My school recently had a complete renovation of the theatre space, including all new lighting and sound, to replace a seriously decrepit alcora system. We previously had no sound system of our own.

[by decrepit I mean only 1/2 the desk channels working, gaffa-tape mended cabling, blown bulbs and fuses, no safety chains and barely any lanterns]

Now our system consists of (off the top of my head, so not accurate)...

Lighting...

Showtec Showmaster 48 DMX Desk

24 Channels Showtec Rack-mount Dimming

12 Channel DMX Swithcpacks

60 5A Positions on 5 LX bars (2 FOH)

2 Showtec RGB Colour Mixers

Approximately....

10 Fresnels

6 Zoom Profiles

3 Floods for back wall cyc (300W which melt Hi-temp gel in 2hrs)

4 Overhead Floods

4 2kW Floods (used FOH)

1 1200W Discharge Follow-spot (very noisy)

Plus some old analogue stuff as well [3 T-Bars, 1 12ch 2 preset desk, 4 Alphapack I Dimmers]

Sound (the kits not bad but the installers did a messy job of it)...

Allen&Heath ZED 428 Desk

Panasonic DVD player for CD's

2x Behringer 30band graphic EQ (one stage end for monitors, one FOH for PA)

Alto Stereo Compressor

Behringer fx Unit

4x JTS Wireless headset mics

1x Wireless JTS Handheld mic

24 Ch Multicore from Auditorium Rear to Stage

Behringer or Alto Crossover (can't remember which)

3x Stereo Amps (1 for tops, 1 for mids, 1 for subs) - [Don't know the make, the installers rebadged them]

2x Understage Subwoofers (re-badged)

PA Speaker arrays (2 Mids, 1 top; each side) [these also re-badged]

4 Alto Active Monitors

Mics - 6 JTS Gooseneck condensers (replaceable heads), 2 Shure SM58, 1 Shure PL something

I feel that we are very well off with this kit, for a state school, but there are still many limitations with what we can do...

I) the acoustics in our hall are pretty bad, as it used to be a gym

ii) the member-of-staff-in-charge hates rehanging lights, so we are very limited with my designs

iii) the install company mucked up on installing the speaker arrays, they are hung against the prosc. wall, so any mics placed in front, or on the front of the stage give feedback (which is a pain as we often have a full choir/string section on the floor)

Blimey, did someone actually ok that kit as a good long-term investment? Ok, there's probably a load for your money, but if your Alcora got bashed about and didn't take it, that lot won't last 5 minutes.

Edit: actually, just noticed it's a 5a install too, so I'm guessing there really wasn't much consultation.

Just done some research and I don't think it actually was an alcora, something cheaper with a similar name?, and it had been there since the school was built (1960s) so it didn't do too badly.

I guess the reason we got what we did is money, the company gave the cheapest quote, and the school didn't want 2 separate companies (for lighting and sound) so they picked one who offered both, despite being very aware that the company didn't have a clue about lighting. [and without consulting any of the students who would be using on a regular basis]

the 5A is a problem, cos we have 4x 2kW floods front of house, and when combined with all the other fixtures, we have to be careful how many lights we power up at once, to avoid blowing the system :)
