6 ETC ParMMC (I think that's their name - Thy're like ParNel's with interchangable lenses)

I think you probably mean Source 4 Par MCM. (Metal Cold Mirror) It's a regular Source 4 Par (with interchangeable lenses) with a special mirrored reflector that allows IR light (and therefore most of the heat) through, rather than concentrating it in the beam.

Unfortunately the sound gear is all from IT/AV installers who don't have a b****y clue as to what they're doing or specifiying or wiring or ANYTHING, so I shan't bother mentioning it!

I know we could be doing a lot worse. Although I am trying to convince my school to spend £50k+ on a new project but we'll see about that one...

Crickey, some of you have alot don't you?

Anyway, this is what we have at my colllege, mostly old stuf but its a small theatre and it gets us by. I guess if we did have moving heads etc the lecturers wouldn't use them.

Here goes,

Lighting (my area)

- Strand GSX digital DMX lighting desk (100 channel model I think) NO kolidascope sotware

- 24 channel Sirius 24 manual analouge desk

- 6 zero88 betaback dimmers (6 channels, each, with two sockets for each channel doubleing the amound of patchible lights from34 to 68. WOO) split into 3 phases, Blue, Red and Yellow

- Zero 88 Demux 48 Demux unit

- Half (yes half) of a zero88 Delta5 4 channel soft patched dimmer unit (half because 2 channels wasnt working, pat test guy took it to fix it in July and it never came back!)

- 70 15amp sockets spread around the theatre, about 50 on the grid and the rest in foot light sockets at 5 points around the theatre

- Around 12 1K fresnel lanterns (brand is spotlight)

- Around 4 - 5 500W fresnel lanterns (Again spotlight brand)

- 8 1K Profile spot lanterns (guess what? SPOTLIGHT BRAND!!)

- 1 500W Profile spot lantern (Spotlight)

- PAR 64 lanterns (not sure how many, in a word, ALOT. I think its about 12-15)

- 8 PAR 16 'Birdies' (Seldom used)

- 10 standard flood lights. The type that look like outside security lights on a house. (6 used on the grid as houselights, 2 used behind the cyc wall as safelights for actors and 2 used as uplights)

- About 4 - 5 old profile lanterns. Strand I think

- 2 'breadbin' fresnel lanterns made in the 1400's (1970's or 80's I think)

- A respectible abount of around 10 15amp extensian cables for lights 5m and 10m I think

- A respecible seletion of gels and a few gobo's (gobo's seldom used)

- A follow spot. Guess what brand? Yes you said it, SPOTLIGHT!!

Sound (Not my area but im going to take a shot in the dark and say) note thigs with * are shared between us and the music department

- 9 - 12 channel sound desk. Unsure of brand

- 2 CD players mounted on rack (Sony)

- 2 mini disc players mounted on rack (Sony)

- 3 lapel radio mics

- ALOT of standard hand held mics requireing 3 pin XLR's*

- ONE HECK of alot of sound cables, XLR's, Jack - Jacks, XLR - Jack's etc*

- Smaller 9 channel sound desk (Belongs to the music department but us lot in performing arts take it on tour with us)

- 4 grid mounted speakers

- More speakers, bass bins, monitors etc which belong to the music department

Other stuff

- 6 channel mobile dimmer rack with fader control for each channel (Sirius 24 can be hooked up to it put it never is. Dimmer runs off 13amp and running 6 theatre lanterns off it when only one sucks out more power than suitable for a 13amp socket is rather fun) Used for touring only

- 2 T-Bars each can hold 4 lights. Mainly used for touring

- 13amp extensian cables (Alot of them)

- 2 channel 13amp dimmer set (home made by our ex-techi. It works like a chalm accept one of the channels doesnt simmer any more, its just on or off)

- 3 strobe lights

- 1 smoke machine

- cue lights system, never used

- TBack system, sometimes used

- Rostra staging with wooden decks. 'bridges' for use when using double and tripple decks

- Saftey barriers for rostra

- Stage weights and saftey braces

- H+S equiptment including gloves and hard hats

- 1 set of adjustable height aluminium ladders

- 1 scaffold tower

- Retractable 'racked' seating with seating for 100 people

Might not be much put it gets us by

Everyone on here is really quite lucky. Although the lighting at my school Does the Job the sound is appalling and the sooner it is replaced the better.

Josh

Lucky is, of course, a rather large joke; I believe you make luck. I'm on a technician band and it's annoying that we all work when we're not busy and then come back to college to be depressed. Will do list tomorrow after get-out pain has subsided.

To quote some famous philosopher;

It ain't what you've got, it's what you do with it!"

Given the right operator, it takes very little to make a space look well lighting-wise. We have "only" 24 channels of dimmers in our hall, but while I was LD, I never used more than 18. 24 seems just that little too much (plus it left a 32a socket free for my own pa system to go in).

As for sound, well the brand name does sometimes help. The fact is, we never get the same sound out of our 300 quid carlsbro active's as I do from my own Mackie/Electrovoice rig. The cheap Beyer mics are noticeably distorted at anything more than normal singing, whereas my own SM58's and Sennheisers sound much better.

The thing we lacked at school (while I was there) was somebody who actually had a theatre background to show us the ropes (quite literally sometimes). I had to get my technical theatre experience from out of school and then apply it when I got back. I've just done a few jobs for my old school (sound) and each time we've covered ground that I covered with last year's technicians. Knowledge just doesn't seem to be being passed along. Ideally a school's drama teacher will have been involved in theatre and maybe even from a directing/production side of things. The best we ever got for our productions was "ooh look, he's angry, make it red"!!! Not condusive to good lighting design. Wish we'd had a dedicated performing arts technician!

As my old school (which I listed above, but don't think it's a great idea to name) have very little sound kit, they also tend to borrow my kit in, sooo, I may as well list that too;

Allen & Heath GL2400-24 desk

Mackie SA1521z's x 2 loudspeakers

Electrovoice SXA100+'s x 2 loudspeakers

Mackie SRM350's x 2 loudspeakers

TC Helicon Voiceworks effects

TC Electronic M300 effects

Samson S-com compression

Shure SM58 x 3

Shure SM57 x 3

JTS radio mics - 1 x handheld, 2 x lav/headset

1km XLR cabling (No I'm not joking!)

24x4 45m multicore

8x4 45m multicore

5 x comms beltpacks with headsets

1 x comms master station

500+ metres 16A mains cabling

hanging mics x 6

SE1a x 2

Behringer DI boxes

db technologies in-ear monitoring

show control pc running multiplay

and a partridge in a pear tree!

You are totally right. I have created what I believe to be good lighting using only 12 of the 18 available channels because of breakages. I have never been able to get good sound out of the sound system though.

There is just one minor component missing. A Playback Device. We had a nice new Sony Pro CD player but when Connevans came and installed the current abomination they took it away stating it was dangerous.

I have tried to plug in my own laptop but haven't been allowed  because the Sheet Connevans supplied with the system states it will damage the system if you plug a laptop into it, even thought the supplied mixer has multiple phono Inputs.

What A Load of B*****s
