Eh? You have three venues with all this nice kit in a school?! Seems like I went to the wrong place for my education ... :(

Hardly a 'massive DMX rig' from me, but the lantern stock has doubled in size since I have been in charge. One phrase:

"Parents Association"

Also, many of the events we put on are Young Enterprise organised. We charge the Young Enterprise companies and buy equipment.

Yes we are very lucky, I should point out however that the theatre and hall are partly operated as commercial venues, with a mix of outside hire, and some smallish touring theatre shows coming in. The primary focus is still school use however and the relevant pupils get very good access to the venues and equipment.

Ok, Here goes....this is for a fully comp, with years 9 - 13 attending.

Multi Purpose hall, seats around 200, and sound gear used elsewhre

Dimming/Control

3 6ch Pulsar touring racks, bolted into a "rack"...(if you can call it that!)

Patch by using socket tails in lighting cupboard.

Old 18ch Pulsar Desk

All connections made with 5 pin DINs which are a b@st*rd to use with hired gear

Rigging/Access

4 8way IWBs in the hall, around the edges

4 IWBs above the stage (8-12ch)

4 dips on stage - Condemned. Come to think of it I think the whole system is...

Zarge Ladder for access. No scaff tower

All circuits terminate in flying leads and 15A plugs backstage, and 5A sockets on the bars.

Lantern Stock

Something like:

4 x PAR64s

2 x CCT Cantenza (sp? - the Profiles)

5 x Small strand floods (137 I think)

2 X Par 56s

12 x CCT Minuette Spots (mix of Fresnel and PCs)

3 x Patt 23s

2 x Patt 123s

and only 15 C-clamps and chains.

And 4 500W floods (like in your garden), relecting off the hall ceiling as house lights

Sound

Not sure about model numbers...

Mixing Desks

1 x 8ch Airmate Mixer

1 x 12ch Behringer Mixer, with integral FX processor

1 x Phonics 8ch Mixer

1 x Yamaha Portastudio (Ok, not quite a mixer, and is mainly music's)

Record/Replay

2 x Sony CD Players, wired for Airmates autostart

2 x Sony MD Decks, again wired for autostart

A turntable somewhere, and numerous tape decks.

And a Sony Tuner, not used during shows

Amplification/Cabs

1 x Behringer Europower Amp (1.2K per channel)

1 x Yamaha Naturalsound domestic amp (used for relay)

1 x Ariston Monitor speakers (used for relay)

2 x Small Carlsbro cabs (rarely used)

2 x dead Boost cabs (never used)

2 x Carlsbro monitor wedges (old, cheap but do the job)

2 x Behringer Europower Full Range Cabs

2 x Behringer Subs

(The behringer stuff came as a kit, and is used together)

Mics

1 x SM58s (the other one walked)

2 x AKG instrument Mics

1 x othermic (can't remember make/model)

1 Trantec radio Lav

Used to have 2 more lavs, and a Radio SM58

Processing

Behringer AutoCom Pro

Behringer Feedback Destroyer PRO

Alesis MIDIverb

2 other Behringer boxes (cant remember offhand - not used for a while)

Comms

4 x Motorola HandiePRO Euro PMR446's

Used to use tecpro but that got killed.

Effects/Misc

1 Eiki Boardroom Projector

1 B&W CCTV camera

We use my smoke machine, a little £40 jobbie

My small UV tube if needed

and whatever elsewe cobble together.

It looks a lot online, but it doesn't seem that much in real life. Oh well...

Hi Everyone

I am been too lazy I am a ICT /AV technican at a comp school in Rastrick West Yorkshire. We have two main theatre spaces which we have two separate set ups of both sound, lighting and video projeciton equipment set permanently in each space. We then have extra equipment such as some martin macs, a yamaha 01v96 and numerous floating projectors and other useful bits and smoke, talkback etc which we are able to use in both locations. We are also very lucky too have a full off line video suite with numerous tvs and 3 Cannon XL1s. Which is then backup up with 3 top of the range PC Systems.

My main question is not amount but how? I can see from reading that there is some technicans out there. We have a huge budget fro ICT tech for servers computers projection systems etc but money for theatre stuff appears once in a blue moon which I have managed to spread well!

Does any body know of funding which you can apply for as a school to help purchase and up keep the equipment bought working?

Cheers Please feel free to send us a mail if you don't want to post figures etc

At my old school we had 2 'venues' (term used loosely). Our main hall and our drama studio, both having to share the Lighting equipment between the two places.

Lighting

4x Selecon ZS650w (650w Zoomspots)

4x P743s

2x CCT Min PCs

3x P123s

4x P23s

a few box type fresnels (P... something no idea of there number)

3x Battens (no idea what there number was rank strand again) - They were only in the Hall.

2x Pulsar Floods.

Dimming

Hall

2x Pulsar 6way packs

2x Rank Strand 6way Packs

All on 5pin din plugs and had converter box for the strand-pulsar

2x Pulsar 12ch manual 2 preset desks

Drama studio

2x Pulsar 6way Packs - 5pin din)

1x zero88 Alcora - Nice desk shame about the noise of the go botton.

Rigging

Both Venues are on 5amp!

Hall

3x FOH Bars fixed

3x Onstage bars fixed height

Drama Studio

2x Bars running the width of the studio

Sound

In both venues it was as equally appaling as the lights.

I didnt get to involved with the sound but I knew enough to get by

hall

2x Carsbrolo Cabs

2x Speakers that were in our cantean which we could opening the slidding doors and make the room bigger.

1x 12Chn Mixer (no idea of the make all I knew was that it was rubbish)

2x H/H amps

Mic wise- an AKG hand held radio mic.

couple of senhiser eSeries normal mics.

and some cd players etc.

Drama Studio

Was like a home stereo system

1x Amp

1x Tape deck :(

1x CD Player

It was so laughable we sometimes brought the PA over from the hall to use.

Extras

1x Antari Hazer - Was allowed to use it until they changed the fire alarm system and then it started setting it off so was deemed completly useless. Long running battle to convince the caretakers that they could disable the zones but they werent having any of it!

2x Martin CX-2s

1x Martin 2518 Controller

Dont ask why I wasted the schools money buying that little martin system I should of spent the money alot more wisely I.e a few fresnels or Source fours or something other then disco #####. Luckily we managed to sell them.

I personally owned 6x Par64s which I used in school just to boost up the lx a bit and it was something so simple that that made the lighting a lot better.

Obviously we had to hire in a fair amount of equipment for rock gigs etc and I found a local hire company Martins Lights who was really cool and could supply us with what we needed at a good price. Also for sound our very last rock gig we did we hired in an awesome D&B C7 rig from Sound Foundationfor that and it was so cool! Especially what we were used to.

Anyways that was my old skool, at college its a lot better thank god!

  • 3 years later...

I was just wondering and I'm sure others might want to compare what they have. Well, to start I have (private school)

LIGHTING

  • One sirius 24 (Analogue)
  • 18 channels of dimming (2 need fixing)
  • 48 5 amp sockets scattered around the hall (16 FOH)
  • 14 Acclaim axial profiles 18-34 degree's(I think)
  • 6 Par 64's
  • 6 nine cell battons
  • about 10 Pat 23's
  • About 20 quartets spread between our main hall and drama studio
  • One followspot
  • Loads of fairy lights/working lights e.t.c.

SOUND(I'm not a sound guy btw)

  • 3 Sound desks, one used as a fixed install for microphes during assebelly e.t.c)
  • 2 wireless lapel mics
  • About 6 wired normal mics
  • One 12/4 stage box
  • 2 fixed speakers on the walls, I don't know what make)
  • Assorted other speakers
  • Various Mic stands
  • 2 Trunk cases filled with assorted sound cables

OTHERS

  • One stobe (student owned)
  • Assorted Dj lights(Again student owned)
  • 2 T-bars (Guess what...student owned)(not by me btw)
  • 1 Jem 800 smoke machine
  • Bottles of fluid for smoke machine
  • One video camara for backstage feed
  • Loads of extensions
  • One set of camford Coms (8 stations)
  • Assorted projecters stolen from teachers classrooms :D
  • Random Gels and gobo's

And that is for a 400 odd seat hall, only used for exams, assembellys, parents evenings and theatre stuff. However, they are planning a 500K improvement for it. With 90K on new Kit. However, the school has just bought a huge new building so this redo won't happen before I leave  . However, I am hopeing we will get the money for the new kit befroe the update. Also, we do have big budgets for our yearly big musical, not been told the final budget for tech stuff but I know it's over 5K. :D

So... lets see what you've got...

Oh you lucky private school students.

Lighting wise we have:

  • 4 x Strand Patt. 23
  • 3 x Strand Patt. 123
  • 4 x Minuette Fresnels
  • 4 x PAR64
  • 10 x Garage Flood Lights  - 2 used as house lights, 2 top lighting, and 6 for the cyc
  • Zero88 Alcora 12/24 preset desk
  • 3 x Zero88 Betapacks
  • 3 FOH bars - 2 attached to the side of the hall, one stupidly close to where the stage goes!!

We have a fair bit of Q-Build Stage (36 panels of wood, assorted heights - mainly ~.5m with 6 ~.25m), a decent Chauvet smoke machine, a bubble machine and a strobe.

Our stage area is used as a classroom, so we cannot have a permanent stage, or keep the wings and backdrop curtains down. You should all consider yourselves lucky if you have a permanent theatre area!!

My current plan is to get some proper cyclorama lights (1 or 2 Codas) and some more profiles (2nd hand Cantata).

Lighting:

  • Zero88 Frog
  • 18 Channels Strand Tempus dimming
  • 32 Ways of 5a on the Grid
  • 6 Patt 23's
  • 3 PAR 64
  • 10 Fresnels (Don't know what type)
  • 2 T-Spot Profiles
  • 1 Harmony Profile

Sound

This

No Multi core Between stage and Box, no wired Mics, just what you see in the pic 2x Trantec S4500 Mics.

I HATE it, half of the speakers don't work and although it is meant for the hard of hearing no Infra-Red or Induction Loop system is fitted.

Video:

A very nice 10,000 Lumens Epson Projector

Other:

The only other thing we have is a Music Tech Teacher who is willing to help us argue our case for new equipment. (Especially the sound)

Stuff they borrow from me sometimes:

1x 16/4 Multicore

8x Par 56

2x Showtec 4ch Dimmer

2x Roboscan 218

2x SSC 2

1x Mojoscan 1

1x Mirrorball and Rotator

1x Freeport Lav Mic

3x Trantec S3.2 Lav Mic

1x Smoke Machine

1x UV Tube

4x Skytec Speakers

1x Skytec Amp

1x Behringer UB2222 Mixer

1x Behringer Shark

4x KAM Handheld Radio Mics

Edit: Added More Stuff

Not my school any more, but may as well be with the number of times I'm asked back to hire kit and myself!

I used to dabble in both sound and lighting, but am a noiseboy at heart.

Lighting;

1 x Sirius 24 (love that little desk)

1 x Fat Frog (and wish it was a pearl 2004)

24 channels of dimming (4 x betapack 2's - plus another 3 ancient strand ones that ca occasionally be wheeled out, but we only have a 13A supply available to them!)

10 or so Fresnels (500w)

8 x Par 56

2 x Par 64

1 x Futurelight PHS200 moving head

2 x Selecon Pacific with scrollers

several generic 500w floods

6 x LED par's

1 x antari DMX smoke machine (student owned)

Lighting was nice up until now, just wait for the sound!

1 x Spirit folio sx 12ch desk (nice little desk, but only 12 channels)

2 x Carlbro gamma 15" 500w active cabinets

1 x 24x4 multicore

6 x very cheap Audio Technica mics

2 x SE1a mics

5 x very inexperienced technicians trying to run the thing and who still don't know the meaning of a balanced line!

The lighting guys are slightly better, but didn't even know how to play frogger on the Fat Frog!!!!! Life does get interesting when they try and use the moving head though! Little more work needed!

at the moment theres nothing in there because the band have nicked it. They have been reported though.

2x peavey speakers (the Impulse series)

2x other speakers (140Wpeak), the person that chose the original speakers didnt have a clue about them so he got a amp 2x the power and students just love to push that fader, so now we have 2 speakers that are praticaly dead.

one powered mixer (forgotten who its from)

8U rack with CD & tape player.

all this equipment has to be put in a good enough state to light/sound the GCSE drama students in may. time to be nice to teachers

I usually 'work' at a local private school. but im sure that ex-student will come along soon,

I would list there equipment, but it would take a while (and they are in the middle of a £30k revamp
