Horse Ring Tone

Hi All,

I've been asked to provide some PA for a horse event next year (I love it when customers plan ahead !) the only issue im having, they want the 'Tone' to start the rounds etc, having had a look around I am unsure what people are using ?

It needs to be fairly easy to use so the 'Judges' can activate it so cant be anything too taxing !

Is there a specific tool / box for this ?

What does anybody else use ?

All help gratefully received :)

Only once been asked for something like this - in fact I don't think I was even asked for it, it was just a facility on the amp I supplied, and they liked it :)

It was a 100V system, using a TOA amp that had a "page/chime" button on the front.

You can get "paging mics" with a chime built into the mic base - something like this:

I guess that would do the job - although if they want to use the tone to start the round, it might be better to use the base on its own rather than keying the mic through it, otherwise you get the tone at the start of every announcement.

See if there's any footage online of events from previous years?

But if it's just a basic chime that they need, the product Bruce linked to is probably ideal. I'd be tempted to leave the mic unplugged altogether, so that it can't pick up any unintended backchat from the judges.

I’ve used a toa amp chime as well.

From memory, the chime was a different button to mic on.

I have also used a continuous tone routed through a normally off hand switch. Just a 35mm film can (shows how long ago) with a button fitted in the bottom and the lead out of the (official) top.

Last time I did a horse event was 30 years ago, it was ALWAYS a bell then (More like a fire bell than a doorbell). My solution,by demonstration to clients, was a firebell in a wooden and soundproofed box containing a microphone. It was done that way so it could be sounded to different zones. Edited by sunray

The old InterM PAM120/240/x have external contacts for the typical 'supermarket chime', so it can be chimed remotely from a doorbell / open contact switch of choice if you have one of those amps available

Another alternative might to try hack an electronic doorbell if you have an old one lying around that makes a suitable sound
