T-shirts

I do think that T-Shirts printed as we're describing, do have a place in certain cases. Schools and colleges are one of them. Getting everyone a T-shirt with the name of the show on the back is a good team building thing, and people genuinely like wearing them. I've got a pile of these that I could never wear - names of the show in big letters. They're not really a badge of office, just a label! The technical bods like to have their different - with CREW in big letters on the back, again - just a badge of office really. Once people start real work, they realise the merit of being anonymous. We had a student come to us for a day. We'd told him blacks, and he came with CREW in white on the back. Everyone took great delight all day pointing him out to everyone who asked a question "Oh. you need to talk to that bloke..." He soon found out where the toilets were, where the box office was, where the disabled facilities were, what time the interval was, were there any seats for fat people, it was like a magnet for boring questions!

For the OP, Pauls post is good, a reasonably priced local-pages t-shirt printer can supply a good team builder/memento for young people.

My own have small, non-white name/logo either on the shoulder or low down along the hem line. Still seen but not intrusive, blacks are black and not emblaoned with bright colours. I have polo shirts with "breast pocket" name/logo of the same colour but for company shirts they should be good quality. People tend to keep them and not use them as diesel rags. Because I work mostly outdoors (and age makes me feel the cold) my polos are really heavy duty and last forever.

Irony dictates that my shirts come from a firm in Cheltenham because they hold my artwork whereas Pete, who is from Cheltenham, gets his from Farnham....you takes your choice!

If they are just for one day get some special T-shirt print paper for your printer, colour print your logo and iron them on.

These do deteriorate quite quickly particularly the type designed to do on dark T-shirts.

I'd like to add a vote for the t shirts. I had a large batch of decent quality black t shirts made up with the school logo, school theatre name and "Technical Crew' embroidered onto a small area on the front left (I agree that large 'Crew' logos can look very foolish!). It's not only meant that the crew are easily identifiable and look more professional during events but we have a rule of after three major contributions to an event in the theatre/studio a student can keep a t shirt which seems to go down well. I’ve had many very positive comments from staff and public about them too.

When I was looking into getting them done there were plenty of places with similar prices - a ten minute search on Google should give you a few options. Make sure they send you a proof of the design and that you're happy with it before giving the go ahead.

From A school environment we only had a few printed up with the last bunch of show t-shirts, as many of the crew were younger than the cast, so the cast would often ignore them if they had to do something in the wings, or just blank them when told to move.

It is something which in schools can be useful when cast numbers become 50+, and certain staff e.g. music dept just come along at the very end then need crew to plug the band etc.

So yes useful in schools, not useful in the real world.

The only thing is I do find polos rather comfortable for the physical work, so still wear my stage lx one from work experience.

A bit O/T sorry,

a few weeks ago we had a show at school, and the school was considering giving every member of the crew (about 5 of us!!) black hats with the word crew written on them. Thank goodness they didn't have them made in the end, as that woud have been really embarrasing and would have made me look a right idot - and wearing cans with them too would make me look like a dodgy American pilot!!

Anyway, I think that t shirts with a small name/crew on them look ok, and in a school environment would be quite good - the amount of times I've been up to one of the cast during a rehearsal saying about lighting (like moving the uplighters - that is sooooo annoying), and they're like 'who are you??'. Also, it helps less confident people/crew identify which people are crew and which aren't- especially if they need some help etc.

Just my opinion though..

Other guys at my school have the crew polos, and whilst they look smart from the front, they have CREW in big white letters filling the back. I never bothered with one due to having many black tops, and due to being the sound op I hide at the back, wearing shorts whilst everyone else melts in the hall, which gets fantastically hot during a show! It is also very helpful for being invisible. Look busy whilst not in a crew top and no-one ever asks you anything!

Agree that large logo of any form can look very naff and may also encourage certain sectors to treat you as some form of worker ant...

Small logo or ID may have its uses, in short runs printer transfer poaper has come on a lot , access to a colour laser makes life very easy:

Laser print lasts lot better than inkjet unless get into specialsed inks , though have seen a specialist t-shirt printing machine that printed directly on to the t-shirt.

ive seen plain black T shirts with huge white letters printed on them CREW and alike. Looks hideous and you stick out like a sore thumb.

But I would agree that this would be good in schools. our constantly changing "tech crew" I can barley keep track of whos face goes with that name except for the few regulars.

I like working in polo's and am thinking of getting a few made up with my name and what I do embroiled on the front in small white text.

there is a local production company that also does this but just with their company logo and the website on the back again all in small text.

Just to make things seem a little bit more professional on first appearances and then people start to take me a little more seriously (cause of my age).
