Moving Mirrors?

There's a place for even the oldest of technology. Just watch the Pink Floyd "Pulse" concert video - some of the beautiful-looking stuff that Marc Brickman does with the Telescans simply wouldn't be possible with a moving head unit.

Speaking of nostalgia, you do realise that was 28 years ago??

For my money, nodding buckets never replaced waggly mirrors, heads just seem to become the preference with mirrors seeming falling out of favour.

You can't beat the speed and accuracy of a decent waggly mirror, for rock'n'roll certainly.

I must dig out and fire up my Martin 812's for old times sake 😁 Might even find an excuse to use them 😆

I've been watching some 1990's TOTP and the Goldenscans look b00dy awesome 🥰

I can remember climbing a Zarges with a GoldenScan 3 in one hand. Not sure I could manage that these days...

Seriously??? 😮 😮 😮

I don't think I'd ever have managed that!

They're about 40 kilos for the 1200W bodies, even the 575W were 33...
And the bulkiness would have been an issue, too.

I see they've not exactly engineered that Cyberlight for light weight have they?! Slightly ironic name in my opinion.

Just had a very quick look at the specs compared to the Robe Silverscan which is less than half the weight and about 75% as bright, although with a few less features. And it's still as massive as the old scans. Can we arrange a BR test with 1 of each, a Zarges and Stuart91 to see how he gets on with rigging them both?

One thing I've always liked about moving mirrors is that the beam always comes from all but the same position, whereas with heads the point at which the light actually comes out the unit moves around, especially noticeable with a line of fixtures close together running for instance alternate pans or tilts movements.

And talking of nostalgia, I noticed the Robe product video started with the intro of Insomnia!

Oh, and does anyone else think the 35 degree tilt that Robe claim seems odd?

I try not to think about that! It might be almost three decades ago, but even now I can watch that DVD and not fail to be impressed by what Marc Brickman and his team achieved.

Hell no. Go find an over-enthusiastic 19yr old, like I was at the time.

(It was one of the first "proper gigs" that I worked, which is partly why it's stuck in my memory)

Happy to supply the Zarges, and a brush and dustpan to collect the debris afterwards...

I wonder why nobody has thought of putting a moving mirror onto the business end of a moving yoke? I imagine it'd be a bit of a head scratcher to operate, but it would give you fast movement with a much wider range of positional options.

Vari*Lite used to make one:  https://www.theatrecrafts.com/archive/documents/vlm_spec.pdf

I didn't realize Robe made one as well.  Funny thing is I've spoken to the Robe rep about 10 times in the last couple of weeks and he's never even mentioned them.  Very niche product, I guess.
