My guess is a cheap entry level console but I may be completely off the mark

More entry level than the Pro1?

Maybe the "Pro 0.5" could have only 8 faders on the surface. Or perhaps something that puts most of the UI on an iPad?

I thought they already had one of those? X32 Springs to mind.

How about a desk identical to the X32, except that it has Midas branding instead of Behringer, and costs 20% extra?

I would say unlikely. (The pro half?)

The only console that midas currently produce that is the odd one out is the XL8, I believe that it is older than the Pro series.

With companies such as Yamaha and Digico looking to unify and streamline their ranges I would be surprised if Midas leave it untouched, whether that is to can it or to remodel it.

Well, rumour I heard was that as soon as Midas found an cost effective Multi-Touch screen to replace the current then it'd make it's way onto the Desks.

I've only had a brief hands-on demo of the Pro series, and took an instant dislike to the trackball. It felt like being back playing an arcade machine in the 80s. I imagine multitouch would be a popular upgrade.

Am I the only one in the world who thinks touch screens are the spawn of the devil? I know I'm a boring luddite but they just don't work for me--even on a iPhone I have to really stab at it to persuade them to do anything, my fingers frequently hit two things at once or the wrong thing and I just miss the tactile response of touching something "real".

Anyhow, the pic on the Midas page shows the "something" covered in black satin. Unless it's complete misdirection, it appears to be bigger than the Pro1. I wouldn't be surprised if Fingers is right and it's a replacement for the XL8 (which came out in 2006 from memory)using a more modern interface but aimed at the same client base.

It'll be fun to see what it turns out to be--probably a digital tea and coffee maker for overworked FOH technicians!

I'm all for new tech at a knock down cost and I can see that in some instance one touch screen can save 20 buttons and switches so there is a cost saving there and I wouldn't say no if it were put in front of me but I too prefer tactile controls.

on the subject of midas and the music group, all three web sites (midas, behri and turbosound) are carrying the same countdown, promising new kit and all three share the same stand/booth.

what we know so far:

turbosound WILL be releasing some form of a revamped ELX line array

turbosound are also talking about a beam steerable line array - does this mean a flown array that you can individually eq and change direction/focus on?...if so could control be integrated into a new midas desk? or revamped range?

behri have gone quiet about their digitally integrated and swanky looking iq series of speaker - I seem to have read somewhere that they were going in for turbosound to redesign. if behri speakers had digital interfaces that could be controlled via an x32 system - it would make sense for the more expensive turbosound and midas brands to be cooking up something along those lines.

incidentally I still don't think people have got their head around the fact that this is just one company effectively - staff wandering in and out of the same labs and offices. one company, four brands, to suit different market sectors.

behi are saying on their facebook page tonight that they will be "launching more than 40 industry-shaking products at Namm" a bold statement since aside from the above all I think we know of so far are a redesigned x16 and v2 firmware for the x32 - though a tester let slip a month ago that there were some jaw dropping improvements with v2 - I find it a little hard to believe.

..and if that isn't bold enough midas web site is claiming 'never before in the history...' - whether in terms of integration with turbosound or in terms of new kit, I don't think we are looking at a mk2 of anything. they started a road map when all companies were brought together - behri may be the first to show big leaps in tech but it would be surprised if the other brands are going to be left behind - pulled to the middle ground possibly - but a significant progression. I understand that the remote software (mixtender) is much more basic than the x-edit - I can't see that being allowed to stand.

I talk about behri, turbsound and midas in the same breath and I can see that there are some engineers still quite snobby about the behri name (it's starting to look like someone who paid too much for his audi looking down on a cheaper car brand) but these brands ARE one company essentially - fully integrated like any multi national. what any one of these brands do is going to play out with other brands in the group. I know almost nothing of midas kit hands on, outside the Venice range but I know enough about business to observe that these are no longer 4 companies but one with 4 brands and this particular corporation are gunning to out manoeuvre and out sell their volume competition by aggressive product development... lets see what happens on the 23rd.

Well, I'm going to partly agree and partly disagree. Yes, anyone who sneers at the Behringer brand is about 20 years behind the times (and likely operating on urban myths about how everything they made was patent piracy and so on). Behringer gear was tradtionally at the low end of the market but filled a definite niche there and generally offered good value for money. Some of their more specialist offerings have found their way into the pro market and done well--loudspeaker management, the ADA8000, that sort of thing all hold their own. Now Behringer's moves into things like the x32 tell me they're taking another step in their company development.

But...the big single company is Music Group, NOT Behringer. Uli is a very smart businessman and I suspect he will be very careful about trying to maintain the individual identities. Midas producing a mixer in the x32 price range would steal market share from Behringer; Behringer selling a Turbosound clone for a third the price would steal the market from Turbosound...and so on.

Large holding companies like Music Group frequently own a wide variety of companies going for different markets. Look at Harman International. They do everything from car stereos to AKG (which has both pro and domestic divisions) to Soundcraft to Martin lighting--but they're very careful to keep their holding separate and with separate identities. I suspect Uli will do the same, seeking synergy only in the back room where it makes sense.
