pete10uk
Hi All Just had a request to install some speakers outdoors for a permanent install. They need to be wall mounted underneath an over hanging roof and need to cover a decent area ( 40m x 60m ish & probably 250 people sat down on a grass banking) They will be used for general announcements and background music / sound to accompany a temporary outdoor screen for presentations. They would be mounted quit high (4m above heads) If it were an indoor area I would be looking at 2 x 15" units, my initial thought was a couple of JBL Eons but I'm concerned about the long term aspect of the damp conditions, as where they will be installed although under cover, in strong winds rain could blow onto the units and run down the fronts. What would be the general suggestions of the direction to go? Cheers in advance.
Andrew C
I know what sort of reaction this is going to generate, but "hey, I'm thick skinned". Bose 402 are waterproof, and the 802 is reasonably so. Providing you don't get rain driving into the ports.
Simon Lewis
A number of the passive, plastic speakers would work - including the venerable Bose 101, 402, 802 line (just look at the number installed in outdoor attractions!). There are products from Community and Technomad which offer full weatherproof operation (IP56)...
Bazz339
LooK at DNH, they do a lot of weathproof speakers, TOA do as well there may be other units on their web sitel.. RCF is another one. If they are for announcement/background and not part of the performance you are probably best looking at commercial/install louspeakers many of which sound quite good if used appropriately. I would go for weatherproof if you can and you need to think whether they are powered off a normal stereo amp orn100V line system.
kerry davies
I would normally start thinking, Tannoy and KEF but Martin Audio actually do a specialist outdoor cinema system AM something or other. Why not pick their brains, not known to bite. I would be reluctant to choose any that didn't have plenty of outdoor specific experience, what works for outdoor touring does not necessarily work for full-time install. Technomad do look good Simon, been thinking about them for some time, anyone any experience?
smalljoshua
I believe EV also have some offerings, I should know the model as I helped install 40 of them in a Rugby grounds last summer. They're under the front lip of the grandstand and are still working just fine. Josh
oakeedokee
Yep, I'd also recommend EVs. The model is the ZX1i, totally weatherproof and can be operated on 100v line systems as well as low impedence. Nice and easy to install too. They also come in 90deg x 50 deg or 100deg x 100 deg versions. See HERE
Stuart91
Community R-series work very well. Depending on the precise layout it may be more cost-effective to use a smaller number of more powerful horn loaded speakers than lots of smaller boxes. bruce
Tannoy got a mention above. I saw about a dozen Tannoy I8t and I6t units in a cash converters shop in Glasgow today. Weatherproof, with 100V transformers and brackets.
Bazz339
Apart Audio is another one to consider look at the Mask8s

Weatherproof, with 100V transformers and brackets. They obviously hadn't been put up with secure bolts, then!
Doug Siddons
Have a look at HZ Sound systems Z500's, passives are the way to go in this situation.
paulears
We have lots of the Tannoys, all over - exposed to sea air and after 4 years they still perform brilliantly - but look a real mess. The front grills rust away badly - our cream coloured ones are now a deep rust brown on the front - but they just seem to carry on!
dylan-penguinmedia
I fitted a number of the Tannoys for the outdoor terrace area of a Lloyds No1 bar in a marina and echo what Paul has said - years on they look pretty bad but all are functioning fine.
