The studios in London W12 where TOTP is recorded now belong to a seperate company called BBC Resources. This is an independant company owned by the BBC but doesn't draw any income from the licence fee. Therefore it is able to exist as a seperate entity and advertise for custom from the wider industry (not just the BBC)

Each of the BBC Resources studios at Television centre is available with a fully saturated rig of 5K dual source lanterns. There are central supplies of par bars of 6, (normaly wired in 3's) cyc lights, floor cans groundrow sills etc. so almost all the conventionals you would want come with the studio.

"Fancy" lights come in and out of fashion so often they are always hired in specifialy for the show. (eg LED fixtures, robotic fixtures etc...)

There are a number of studios across the country owned by the BBC that have moving lights. The studios at BBC Wood Norton were given some Mac 500's & 600's by Martin, BBC Northern Ireland have a large selection of everyone's favourite lights...

Hope I have got most of that right - I do work for BBC Resources but not in studios therefore most of this is second hand. If you are interested,

This is the layout of Studio 3 (TOTP)

And this is it's Lighting Plan

(Both these are Zipped Autocad Files - you can download Voloview, the free autocad viewer to view them if you don't have autocad.)

and there are details on the website if you know anyone that wants to hire a tv studio of any size ;)

also for long running shows (like live and kicking or something) they must buy the ml's

Well each of the Studio's that the BBC have at TVC get used for different stuff, so the lighting comes in and out for each show. I think there are a couple of fixed studios (9 I think for CBBC) but AFAIK most have different stuff all the time.

The whole reason why they rent the MLs and not buy them (even for long running shows) is so they can keep up with the latest technology and not get bogged down with old, obselete kit.

The Saturday Show (L&K hasn't ran for sometime!) also moved to the other end of the country last year (At some point in the run it gets taken on by CBBC Scotland), so that would have meant taking the kit with them. This way, they just rent new stuff in at Glasgow, or get RML to send stuff up for them, I suppose.

Do a search, this has been discussed before somewhere.

anyway my point is do the bbc have big sales or auctions to sell of used lx kit??

Well both the BBC and theatres I know that not many will but surley when refitting they will.

Can't quite work out what you're trying to say...

OK

There are problems associated with the BBC selling off used equipment.

The BBC can't be seen to be using the Licence fee to buy equipment only to sell it on again.

Within BBC Resources there is a single guy who works to find appropriate markets for selling equipment. (Which is harder than you think as he can't sell anything to anyone that might be seen to be in competition with BBCR, also if you buy equipment through him (not normal in this country) then you often have to sign a legal declaration not to re-sell the equipment back into this country,

Also beccause BBC Outside Broadcast works all across the world (Normaly Europe though Russia and America isn't out of the question) then this gets to be a problem so kit ends up being sold to out of the way places in Africa or Bulgaria for example.

Hope this makes sence.

James

PS I do have his contact details if anyone realy needs them.

PPS if you are looking for a website specialising in second hand broadcast equipment can I recomend BBlist.co.uk

The BBC used to have auctions of kit, I've been to a few. I seem to remember one when they closed down central stores in Acton about 8 years ago. I haven't seen any recently.

If you specifically want to go the auction route keep an eye on the website for Henry Butchers in London (too lazy to find URL) they are the big boys of technical auctions.

hmm, do they have like techspecs on their sites for studios? I'd love to know a bit about the sizes and power, rooms, equipment they have etc.

I think CBBC is in studio 9 IIRC, which is fixed.

someone said they did a technical tour for people interested as well...

There are basic technical specifications on the bbcresources.co.uk/studios stite, giving design layout lighting positions etc.

Studios typicaly have either 5kW circuits or 10kW circuits with a number of fixed mains supplies around both on hoists and at ground level.

Studio 1 has something over 1000 ch of dimming IIRC

The BBC still does do free backstage tours

The CBBC chanel is in Studio 2 at the moment and Cbeebies is in Studio 0.

(Studio 0 has it's lighting controled by a Zero 88 Illusion by the way ;))

thats strange, the cbbc studio (just had a look on the virtual tour on the website), it looks really small little room for a whole studio ;) and its quite high ;)

I think it would be cool to work as LX at bbc - perhaps one day <_<
