Hi all I've just been watchin top of the pop's (14/05/04) and was looking at, I think the second act cause I had just turned on, and I saw these lights like, oversized strip tubes say about a fist's thickness and they changed colour, almost like a lava lamp movement but like actual colour change. I was just wondering if any one had had experiance with them and if any one knew what they were as they produced quite a cool effect.

the BBC seems to have loads and loads of Chroma banks, so it probably was them (anyone work here for the BBC? you must have such a cool selection of lighting stock to use ;))....

they're a few thousand each IIRC...

Well from AFAIK (and perhaps Andy Stone would confirm?) the BBC don't own any MLs etc, so I doubt they own any LED stuff either. This would be hired in for each show as and when would be required along with MLs.

From what I saw it looks like the ChromaBanks fitted with LightPipe . But I still dont see how you can get the colour transition.

they're LED fixtures so you can adjust the indervidual RGB values for each segment (depending on control mode).

therefore in theory you'll be able to fade through 16.7m colours...

But I still dont see how you can get the colour transition.

An educated guess is the Chromabank is split up into sections so you can do X amount of colours on one batten, and the Pipe acts a defuser, meaning all you see is a splodge of colour on the plastic, instead of a cluster of LEDs.

Program a nice chase, or use one of the inbuilt macros on the fixture and I should have thought you'd have a result.

Surfing round the Pulsar site will probably garnish you with more information.

Stu is right, The BBC dont own any ML's, the TOTP rig and most other BBC shows ML kit is hired from Richard Martin Lighting, who are approved BBC ML suppliers.

I missed the show, but would guess that they were chromabanks with light pipes on the front...

Whta Generic stock do they have- it must be pritty vast, also for long running shows (like live and kicking or something) they must buy the ml's- anyway my point is do the bbc have big sales or auctions to sell of used lx kit??

Also do all shows performaed at the bbc studios have the right to use the lx stock?? Would like to know how the system works

All the moving lights are rented in from RML, long running shows like Live and Kicking and TOTP and the Lottery come in and out of the studio each week, they arent left up all the time.
