My old secondary school:

Dimming/control

36 ways PARADIME dimmers controlled by a Fat Frog

Jands Event 48

Cord patch to 70 points around the venue (46 FoH, all others LX1-3., all on fixed LX bars)

Rigging/access

3 LX bars over stage, 6 LX bars over flat auditorium. All fixed to ceiling

Access: 10-rung Zarges, 6-rung Zarges, scissor lift (hand-operated - you release the deadbolts and push up!), QA tower (tended to get used for spot positions at the back of the hall, cos the caretaker had it locked away).

Boy howdy was the headmaster fussy about WaH - he once told me, on finding me atop the scissor lift without supervision "you're putting yourself at risk, you're putting other people at risk and more imp - I mean equally importantly you're putting me at risk, because I'm legally responsible for you".

Lanterns

4x Source Four Zoom 25/50

2x Source Four Zoom 15/30

5x Junior Source Four 25/50

8x Selecon Fresnels (Rama F, I think)

12ish CCT 650w Fresnels

10x PAR64

2x CCT PC 650w

2x Strand Coda 500W (we used them as house lights...the horror)

2x MAC500E movers (one of which with cheesy custom rotating "[sCHOOL NAME DELETED] Presents..." gobo for musicals)

1x Atomic 3000 DMX strobe light

Jem Stage-Hazer

Jem Magnum Hazer (after the big one started getting a little iffy; we got them both working for a production of Little Shop of Horrors and the finale was EPIC)

Personnel

Head of Drama nominally "in charge"; student crew of 4ish (ages 16-18) plus up to 12 casuals for big shows (ages 12 up), two other staff members (one was a student technician at the school way back when, the other used to work in the industry).

There were three big shows a year, in November/March/June, as well as GCSE/A-level drama assessed pieces, concerts and assemblies requiring tech support, so at any one time one crew member was nominated CSM for a show. Surprisingly, this actually involved some actual management - arranging rehearsal rooms, taking notes on blocking and action during initial rehearsals and sourcing casual stagehands.

To be honest, some of the lights were over-specified (fixed-angle 750W S4s would have been better, I'd rather have had another load of conventionals and a couple of dimmers than two MAC500Es!) and the rigging was a little ridiculous; the stage was higher than the flat auditorium, and all the advance bars were at the same height - cue horrible shadows. Also the hall projection screen protruded from underneath the prosc arch, so we had to derig it every time we did proper drama - it was held up with four number 8 screws and some penny washers *cries*

We are a small public high school with a 160 seat studio and a small practical studio. A new building for us meant new equipment, however what we were given (prior to my arrival) is not realy very suitable considering they had a large enough budget! 4x Selecon Hui 3 cell battens

6x PAR 64's CP62

6x Unbranded LED PAR 56's

RIGGING:

1x Internaly wired grid with 48 15a sockets, 5x 16a hot power and 5x 5pin DMX outlets

1x 12 way IWB in the small studio

As odd as it may sound, no access equipment has been provided as yet but a suitable set of Zarges are soon to be purchased.

I think that's about it...

Ooh and a set of tall step ladders for the onstage lights... The bars above the auditorium require a scaff tower to be built every time we need to focus or change a lamp <_<

All was here before I arrived except the Zero 88 jester and demux. I manged to get some funding for a desk that doesn't randomly flash lights at you when you walk away

I HATE our lighting gear....

And why would that be? Personally I think the Express 48/96 is a great desk for generics, (and even scrollers / LEDs) and that's not a bad selection of fixtures either... obviously depending on the size of the space, how well maintained they are and what they are trying to be used for.

Sorry I generalised with the word hate. I really like the 48/96. The main reason is the state of the gear when I arrived, about 4 spare lamps in the cupboard all of which were blown. I love the build quality of the old Strand lanterns, especially the 743..

I regard the 743 (and 223s converted to take the T-base lamps) as the best fresnel ever built. The size of the lens, the focus mechanism which makes it nigh-on impossible to blow the lamp while focusing, the build quality and the fact that the barn doors almost never jam when you rotate them.

+1

You've no idea how happy I was when I realised the venue I was going into had them... (they weren't on the inventory!)
