  1. I don't know about silly as they appear to be massive.
  2. I've been talking to someone else who also got heavily involved with streaming and podcasts due to lockdown and his goto has always been the Behringer 302 USB but now for economy systems uses the clone, Micromix1 or 2 providing lots of mic gain is not required. He has used the 'Ising MC' which is 2 mic, 1 stereo when the customer has insisted (some had come with SD card slot) apparently there has been some social media hype about them but he doesn'rate them. He also added Do Not try these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386035139639?itmmeta=01HPM0GP7K9KBRX4RA4SZJ3YA8&hash=item59e17cc437:g:wA4AAOSwZwtk6CRS&itmprp=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4A5bamkcLoUE8Wki88n0i5chgJJ6iKhVxyC7HcnFss8RcQ65aklFWBYd9jbuP2NfswKBXShtJ07OmGHx8j9W5%2BXJvhBMbXbcBaKKdhjx6E04p1P7nQi5yizLnTl4ze9F7Z1DBK2N5ojYwKvmA9tuudyAhl%2F3eUcPz0s1vb1DChWDIXGI9f1xPJby74stUBQmvtGINWd%2B7kjzEya4%2FUbyVY%2F5OF1haomVjYEAafHfluF7w5xFcbgPX41n9Wrk02SkrEobnZv6a7N6rzybnz4S64xWJU0BXH3oA4RvQHqm6LSh|tkp%3ABk9SR_DjwoC1Yw I've had no experience of any of these, just passing on comments.
  3. Can you see any legend beside them? I think the shape and the 220 markings could just as easily be inductors. What sort of dimensions are they, it's difficult to assess but look big assuming those are the main smoothing capacitors to the left. Something along these lines? https://www.mouser.co.uk/ProductDetail/Murata-Power-Solutions/19R226C?qs=RzyoSnN9rS1rBH8pFy5fSQ%3D%3D https://www.mouser.co.uk/ProductDetail/Murata-Power-Solutions/18R224C?qs=AG1tZYOK7s7JGHJ5L0KsgQ%3D%3D
  4. Yes they are, however I've never had them work properly on 12V of a Shure 268 so I was not surprised with his comment. Someone once told me they draw a higher current than other mics although I've never looked at the spec or measured it. I have a spirit notepad which is essentially a similar device and I used to use it in so many 'little' situations, as you describe and I think they have the same heating issue too, particularly on the F1 & SX sort of sizes. I carry a Shure 268 in the Notepad case but so far not been needed as a spare.
  5. I have just finshed a Zoom meeting and with this topic being fresh in my mind mentioned it to the 2 people present, One being a frelance sound op and used to do shows such as X factor, t'other ex BBC engineer but although not sound op as such has frequently had involvement of. More recently he has become the local U3A sound guy and originally replaced the Shure 268 (No tone controls) with a Behringer 1202SFX to run their 4 radio mics to front end the halls fitted system. It worked well until it drank a cup of tea then smoked a ciggy and was sent off the the mixer doctor. In the meantime he was lent a s/h XMIX 1202 FX USB by the mixer doctor and reckons it's everybit as good as the Beringer but has better facilities, especially PFL with decent VU display and 6 Mic I/p's. He loves it and the trade was quickly made back in the summer. Sound got a couple of the Micromix2's during lockdown to stream church services, reckons they are cheap and cheerful and the things against them being the lack of balanced ports, mic pre-amp is a bit noisy when it gets past half way and 18V phantom won't drive 451's but they do what were designed for. I assume the Micromix 1 & 2 are fairly similar units but we have no idea how they compare with the 1202.
  6. I know someone who uses one of those into an Ipad and a headset for zoom meetings, he uses the headset to keep the local noise down and turns the gain up to compensate. He claims to be an audio expert but never says how or why and is always the worst audio with loads of hiss. We don't know if it's the headset, mixer or just a line of incorrect level settings.
  7. Damm... While I was reading the post and looking at directions Ms Sunray was booking something in for Grandchildren... Grr There is a very slight chance a Strand 8 has not been scrapped yet, any interest? Also a couple of 8 way battens.
  8. Ah yes, I have a singer friend who has one, I've also done some mechanical repairs on that with the locking system. I have found they it is susceptible to mains bourne interference, one hall in particular has a big high level heat exchanger/fan unit, there is a significant click when the room stat switches off and another about 20 seconds later when the heater stat clicks off followed by the crunch of the contactor. One of thesefollowed by a 6 inch IEC lead helps considerably. I didn't realise they are supposed to be 400W, she also has a QTX12PA with internal battery, but also under other badges such as Pulse, which I think is 50+50 biamped and would have only said the Ray8 had the edge over it but does sound a little better for her voice. Occasionally she will use the QTX as the slave/stereo and I'd describe it as holding its own.
  9. So the base units would be located near SM position and without the restrictions you previously encountered?
  10. if a wireles system didn't give the coverage you required, I'd make the guess radio mics may not do the job. Do you have a local hire service or Public Address company? to hire from to give it a try? I'd suggest using mic and headset frequencies from 2 different channel groups, basically choosing one each from channel 70, 65, 38 or VHF.
  11. I've seen it but not done any 3D printing myself, however these: seem so obvious to me now that you have pointed it out.👍
  12. Ah right. So this is just the light source, no screen. A bar on couple of wires on a winch like a curtain winder drum but for a 3m lift it will move a lot. I used to install things like this but getting 3m lift behind a 1200mm border is pushing the luck and the lamp will still swing over that drop. https://www.amazon.co.uk/CGOLDENWALL-electric-projector-ceiling-Projector/dp/B015VUUVUW/ref=asc_df_B015VUUVUW/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=375420566373&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4590922493614378784&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045111&hvtargid=pla-634168023357&psc=1&mcid=4054a65a8a9534528a3e953cde361154&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=85278568548&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=375420566373&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4590922493614378784&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045111&hvtargid=pla-634168023357 at £400, I think we were £2K 25 years ago. We also used to install projector screen winches which were slow (~30sec/m) but very quiet but I don't think they'd be strong enough. Realisticaly I think the suggestion of a pair of vertical guide rails and winch is about right. food for thought but electric winch?
  13. I keep seeing this thread and not knowing the term 'shin' I struggle to understand what is required, I assume 'diagonal back' is the lighting (projector) format, initially I assumed it is some sort of rear projector screen to rise while in use or the projector to do so, could someone enlighten me please?
  14. Having more rope on the drum than is required for the travel is no problem whatsoever as long as a whole space is left empty, indeed having an extra turn or two more will considerably help when rethreading it in the future.
  15. 1If you are planning to build Bluecom I sourced some of the rectangular buttons at a very silly price of £1.27 + VAT each(£1.50 each). I'm sure there are still a few in the box, but only a few. I'm too busy to look them out until Feb and dry weather. It's possible there are some belt pack boards too.
  16. Noooo.... I handled a smoke machine recently used by it's owner, complete with a 3 pin XLR extension lead... Sadly the shell on the female (possibly male too) is connected to pin 1 and the join was under the desk with several similar audio cable joins. (Jack outputs on mixer). Luckily it tripped the RCD during setting up apparently without any damage.
  17. Let's just say that the owner of the function hall of the hotel (different to the main bulk of the hotel at the time) was not one to take too much notice of officialdom if they had the chance (and my guess is the reason the building works were not being done in the right order). If the function hadn't gone ahead most of the staff would have been sent home without pay, I also guess they were not very fussy about the status of those who they employed and not many had much recongnition of English language.
  18. Yep, not on the same scale by anymeans. Something similar in a local hotel, the facility was randomly fire inspected and closed as 600 guests were arriving for a company awards dinner as some building works had blocked a fire exit and the alterations for the exit hadn't even been started, inspector stood there and watched as a chef demolished the blockage with a sledgehammer and waiters cleared the rubble by hand and buckets.
  19. I know the problem very well, the problem is the differing numbers of pairs in each cable as they branch off to their destination and records. As a simple example: if a 20 pair cable to a junction box branches out to 5* 4 pair cables, then each of the branches would be identical 4 pair cable with pair 1 starting with blue/white, In other words the blue pair of each branch will be pairs 1, 5, 9, 13 & 17 of the original main cable and colour match would sadly be completely impossible.
  20. I am with you on this to some extent with their point sources but in reality I think it's probably more to do with the light levels and why I mentioned 30W versions. One of the camping events we did every year I used to put up 500W linear for safety, then 50W LED and more recently a 30W. I'm finding more of the floodlights are now coming out with 5mm or 10mm LED's rather than cobs which is slightly better. Also WW seems to be less blinding than CW.
  21. I've used cat 5 (or telephone) cable for balanced audio for years, sometimes some very long runs (>1/2 mile for a bandII RSL, studio to transmitter) with very little issue. Often 2 mic lines in and 2 line levels out, I used to have breakout boxes with M&F XLR + Jack*4. The only killer tended to be ground compensated outputs but I never drive a line from them. The circuit which may be the problem is the partyline as JP mentions but I think it's probably more stable than we fear. The only thing to do is try it and see but very important is to ensure its electrically isolated from the other circuits, especially the ground.
  22. Most of my radiomic kit it Trantec S4.4/16 range and 2 had different size connectors, it didn't take many uses before they became a pain and got moved on. One has BNC aerial sockets but that is more obvious to spot. With those I get the impression there's an element of 'bung these in' and knowing Tranny and Senny are made at the same facilities I wonder if that happens in other ranges.
  23. Thinking again : 1&2 orange pair --- party line ground and audio 3 white/green --- party line power.
  24. I had access to a single CAT5 between stage and rear of hall in a school hall and due to restrictions on what was permitted it was not easy to run cables. I knocked up a breakout cable and ran o/p from desk to amp, one microphone and Bluecom. The only problem being the call light on Bluecom added a click on the mic line. I have no idea of the distance as the two lines went to their IT room elsewhere in the school where they were patched together for the event.
