just looking for some advice really, I am the hire manager for a events company and we currently use Hiretrack and Hirescan to manage our stock but was wondering what everyone else uses and what you think to them.

we have all of our items bar coded and we scan everything in and out.

might be looking at moving as the tech support from hiretrack isn't the best.

thanks in advance

Apart from the support issues, what specific problems are you having with Hiretrack at the moment? I'd hope that once it is set up and bedded in, a system like Hiretrack shouldn't need much in the way of ongoing support so is there a particular issue that you aren't getting answers on?

Also, is your company on a single site, or do you need to manage multiple warehouses? Multi-site complicates things significantly and only certain packages can handle it properly.

We use rental-point and have doen so for 8 years, it grows with us, it handles bar-codes and multiple users and sites, tech support is amazing, software works well and any glitches we had in the set-up were quickly resolved, we changed server in January and our IT guys were well supported by the RP guys.

They are based in Canada but have UK support if its before the office opens in Canada or if a site visit is necesary which to be fair is extreme and normally an hardware issue.

We find Navigators support to be pretty spot on, and I'm usually the first to kick off about poor support/customer service. Having recently migrated to Hiretrack NX it's been smooth and support is there when you need it and swiftly enough.

In contrast to soundguyuk we used Rental point for the 4 years I was with a company in London & everyone hated it - from the warehouse to project managers to accounts. It wasn't setup correctly in the first place but even with support from Oz and an expereinced rentlapoint admin user on board we really struggled with it even after we corrected the initial database. We were looking at alternatives when I was there & not sure what they currently use

And in contrast to 2bit, the company I was with previously used RentalPoint for a long time(and still are to my knowledge) and had no major problems. Like every small software house it had its glitches but the team in Canada were great on support. As I used to admin it it was quite easy to look after.

I haven't used it now for well over 5 years but would recommend it as a software solution

having lots of issues with them and PAT testing

Er, could you elaborate? They won't let you pat test? The software won't record the results? Your tester won't talk to the software? You've tried to go to their office and pat test their equipment for them and they won't let you? Bit more specific please ;) :)

Ditto. We (Enlightened Lighting) upgraded to Hiretrack NX last summer. Their support I have found to be very good. The most recent example was that they solved a non critical software update problem within 45 minutes on a Saturday morning.

We used to run Eclipse and HireScan. We never persevered with recording PAT on HT and have just stuck with seawards own software. PAT records is one of our next projects after going for recording rigging inspections as step one of getting to grips the the quirks before trying to interface PAT hardware.

I can understand your frustration, but equally Eclipse is no longer Navigators current software. I am sure that they will maintain it for critical functionality but it has been no secret that they stopped developing at least 5 years ago!

Good luck.

Protonic Easyjob all the way for me. Built on solid robust SQL database, great support from Protonic, and all the features you need to run a business in the base package, then some.

It's currently at version 5, with V6 due out in the summer by all accounts (unlike some they actually have a regular upgrade cycle...). If you buy the subscription licence, then you'll get the upgrades as they occur. Outright purchase will give you all .x upgrades for the version you buy, so we paid for v4 in 2008, which has done us great, and have subscribed for the next 2 years, giving us V5 and V6 when it comes out.

The cost is very competitive for the features, and you're free to edit and create reports at will with no cost or need to have Protonic do it unless you want them to do it.

Protonic can import all the items and barcodes for you so the transition is pretty painless - I've assisted a little with a large AV/IT rental company in their transition from Hiretrack to Easyjob, and Protonic have plenty of experience in do the data transitions.

Always happy to offer a referral or demo for you...

we have been looking at the upgrate to NX for the last couple of years however we do record all PAT records on HT and are looking at new testers but hiretrack are only surporting a few testers so limits us on our pruchase. we have been asking for them to add new testers and even offered to pay but keep getting fobbed off with the time scale on this.

we curently run hire scan and eclipse and really want to be running NX but need the pat testing to be sorted before we can make the move.

1 thing im unsure on in the new system is the layout of the equipment book. as our hire manager I spend alot of time dealing with barcode issues and stock items but feel the new layout dosnt give me a clear view of how many owend and how many barcoded. unless im missing this.

Have they updated so you can see costs associated with sub hires and things like that - when we looked at Current in October, there was no way to associate things like sub hire costs to see if you were actually making money on a project, or even the costs involved….
