A problem with my service?

It looks a very ncie website. However, I note your use of some American spellings (e.g. specialize on the home page)....... :P

Specialize is not an American spelling. The -ise ending for such words is a recent perversion of English. In my 1978 concise OED -ize is the preferred spelling and -ise does not appear at all in the complete 1933 edition of OED.

Some thoughts of Mine.

Dreamweaver. It's great for me. I know a minimal bit of HTML. It allows me to create a design I like, convert to a template, then build the site on that templates, edit the templates to change the sites look, and allows something that works in pretty much every browser. I've created my own designs for Production:av, while when I worked for them I created the Cheltenham Stage Services Site from a template in DW simply to get them going- Note I don't look after that one anymore....

I wouldn't touch Front page, partly because I use a Mac.... It is time for a redesign on the site, or atleast a good tweaking. If I had the time, and wanted to become a coding geek, then I'd learn to hand code. However I run an AV hire company, not a web design business, so it's about my time priorities.

Hosting and Domains. I could buy smalljoshua.co.uk for £2.99 a year. To host it on 1and1 would cost £2.34 a month (Under £30 for a year). That means there's no issues with switching your PC off etc, looks more professional and gives the options for domain linked emails addresses etc.

Ultimately it depends on what you need. Production:av is a professional company. I need a professional website that works with every browser possible, and is always available, because I don't know when a client might try to find me. I recognise that it could be better though....

I have looked into that particular package but as I use MySQL on my site that package isn't an option. The package I would need would cost £10.56 a month, with 1 Free .co.uk Domain I would be paying Over £120 a year.

I will be buying a Domain and Package from www.eukhost.com who received a Best Buy award in Computer Shopper this month. It would cost £35.99 a year for the Bronze package and would allow me to have everything I need.

I have been considering getting some hosting for a long time and this Topic has persuaded me to get some.

My new site will be online there in a couple of weeks.

For now though any other coments would be welcome.

Josh

Hmm... your point made me check my dictionary - 2004ed and it allows both spellings of specialise/ize and generalise/ize. Interesting - it's true you learn something new every day.

British english has the choice between using the s or the z. American english, I think, only uses z.

I guess us brits just like to be different :P

Wow, I feel like the team in the apprentice that spent 3 hours arguing over where the apostrophe should go...

A bit more on topic, £35.99 sounds perfectly reasonable per year for what you need. It'll look far more professional and save your parents electricity bills a bit :P

Having used both eukhost and 1and1 I can say that in my experience eukhost and vastly more competent. In my short time with 1and1 they managed to balls up my billing then transfer my unpaid 'debt' to a debt collection agency after telling me they would sort it out and then totally messed up a website transfer twice!

Of course your mileage may vary...

Wow! They did the same thing with me, having signed up for a FREE service and then never renewing. I got a very angry letter from a debt collection agency demanding 90 pounds.

PM me for a way to get rid of 'em!

Has anyone tried using Ruby as a site make up?

Friend of mine who's developing a dating site suggested I might want to try it.

Just want to put out some feelers to find out if it's worth using.

I've never had any real issues with 1and1 other than forgetting to update the card details and getting cut off as they couldn't take the payment. Alter the card details, and get the service back in a couple of hours. That said Idon't ask a huge amount from them really....

I'll find out tomorrow....... Our web host is 1And1, the invoice came in on friday, and the card details have changed.....

As Frankenfurter said...... "I see you shiver with antici ..... pation..........."

We'll find out what's hit the fan tomorrow, hopefully nothing

Sorry, currently listening to The Rocky Horror Picture Show :)

I'm with Pete on this one ... 1and1 handle my domains for me, and I've never had any problems with them other than a short disruption to service when my credit card number changed - there was no warning, no e-mail reminding me that an invoice was due for payment, just a very terse "we couldn't take payment so we've suspended your service until we can" kind of letter in the post one morning.

Gareth,

You're words are comforting....

We did get an email from 1and1 ( a few months ago) of a Debit card change (Expiry date), however we don't seem to have updated the details

If we're on-line tomorrow, then everythings ok, if not then expect some expletives in this thread (is that a sentance....not sure)

Currently listening to Wierd Al Yankovic......so things are a little blurry!

1and1 managed to do the same to TBR a month or two ago. And their system was broken so I couldn't update the card, while they refused to turn the account back on until I had updated the card

I was rather annoyed!
