Seen a 743 ( 1k fresnel) caught by its chain when a flying piece took it off the bar, have to assume the wing bolt hadn't been done up. Likewise seen barn door safteys hold the B/D a few times when Lanterns have been turned upside down by accident during focusing or swiped by tight flying pieces- touring houses with bars at 15cm centres don't you just love em...

Have also managed to drop a screwdriver through a cable mesh- lesson learnt- never took un lanyarded tools on the mesh again unless the stage below was empty of people and barriers up.

So in 18 years- yes, once or threetimes at least.

we had the mirror ball fall from the rig about a year ago. unfortunately mid dress rehersal and withy out a bond - or rather there was a bond but only attached to the motor! well one of the poor actors got hit on the head, but no harm was done and he looks back on it and laughs now.

still for each little mirror broken do you get 7 years bad luck? or is it 7 overall? and who gets the bad luck - the muppet who rigged it or the guy whos head technically broke it!?

The worst that has ever happened to us has been during rig/ de-rig.

1. Selecon accliam falling from tower - nearly hitting a stage hand but luckily (?) caught inches from impact

2. PAR 56 falling from a bar (6m up) while rigging (we had run out of normal hook clamps and were forced to use weedy little maplin ones that dont really fit a 48mm bar and cost about 10p) but this missed hitting anyone important - just smashing into the edge of a piece of steeldeck - bulb still worked tho :** laughs out loud **:

Not perticularly bad incidents but still

Hmmm....

Quite tricky actually attach a bond to a mirror ball - they sorta tend to get tangled round the inkage after the first 2 or three turns...!

I've had a ChromaQ scroller caught by its safety when it was knocked off a 3 gel-foot PAR64 during a scene change.

The scroller was hit by some flats being moved, and was hanging in mid air by the safety and the scroller cable.

Luckily this was during the interval, so could be put back on relatively easily.

The rotator we have at work has two points of attachment on the rotating shaft. One straight down, for the ball, and an eyelet thingy on the side, presumably for a secondary point of attachment. I have yet to find safetys that are 2-3 inches long though, for this purpose... maybe I should get a tool?

Incidentally, what tool is used to make safety bonds up? Can somebody please give me a weblink or a pic?

You would need a press, either manual, hydraulic or powered hydraulic. Various different types exist. They are specific pieces of kit designed to provide appropriate pressures for the tasks assigned.

Also the correct crimps for the SWR and the SWR itself. Also the ability to test the item afterwards up to it's relevant loads, and then stampt the item with it's serial number and record it's safe test etc etc.

the testing needs to be done by a competent person, experienced in visual and mechanical test and inspection of such assemblies. All work should be in line wiht present LOLER regs and relevant British Standards etc.

Kit's not cheap either.

If you want a few steels made up, get a company to do it for you. Supplied as tested etc. LGH Rigging Services or Rope Assemblies or LiftTurnMove or many others.

Ha, just realized you are in NZ, so companies not helpful!! But you get the idea!

I've now started seeing mirror balls with an eye bolt built in, so you can attach a bond!
