Simon Lewis
Hi, I'd use Trimite.... you should be able to get it from Adam Hall. Oh, the solvent is almost 100% xylene/toluene, so make sure your paint shop is well ventillated ;-) Simon
Pete Alcock
Strand, The stuff that DIY speaker builders (and touring companies refurbing kit) use in the US, is spray-on truck bed liner. Common brands include Line-X and Rhino. This is a self-texturing goopy sort of paint that dries slightly flexible to withstand knocks. Link to Line-XRhino Liner When I was on holiday in Florida I bought some Dupli-color truck bed liner (aerosol) specifically for this purpose - good ol' US customs confiscated it from my luggage though. Haven't been able to find it in the UK yet but will post when I do. The way companies like HK Audio and Turbosound get that nice textured finish is spray the box with a water-based high-build paint, then when it's dry set the gun to give a "spatter coat" to get the texture. Fine if you've got a spray booth and a lot of boxes to paint. Good luck, Pete.

This stuff is good, most automotive black underbody paint is ok for this and it has been developed to withstand road stone impact.
mikewheeler
The water-based paint referred to above is Warnex by Warnecke & Bohm. Although it is correct that to get the true texture finish like Turbo, Funktion One, L'Acoustics etc you normally use a spray gun with a lower pressure after a smooth coat, you can get a pretty good finish with a long pile roller. Much, much safer to use than Trimite - although not as hard wearing. Mike
johnhuson
Another vote for Trimite, we use it to repaint all our speakers and is the best product we have found after extensive trials! Just make sure as mentioned above that when you use it the area is well ventilated as it has a very potent solvent based smell!!
RonJon
To get a really hard wearing, and good looking "as new" finish on new, or refurbed boxes, use a matt "precat" paint. Smells a bit strong, but is the dogs, even gives you an authentic rock and roll smell when dry. J
drowner77
What is a "precat" paint? Where can you get it and how does it need to be applied?
Animal
I'm a Funktion One user and the way they told me to do it is to use one of those small sponge type rollers (unless you have a spray both). I'm not sure who makes their paint but the paint has like a natural texture in it. I just roll it on with the smooth roller and the end result is a textured finish. slim_mcslim
pre cat - is pre catalised... (sp) have a look at isf coatings paint makers for all substrates. give them a call, after you have decided what paint would be suitable, they sell in small quantities and make up pretty much any pantone colour also don't try applying trimite with a roller, the solvent in it eats the rollers!!! Mike Wheeler
Hey mate, The paint you refer to is Warnex, by Warnecke & Bohm. Rollering it on, as long you use enough of it, certainly should produce texture! Cheers, Mike

bruce
Resurrecting an old thread.... The general consensus seems to be that Trimite is Good Stuff, and there are several other varieties of Good Stuff out there. But.... is there a variety of Good Stuff which can be purchased in somewhere like B&Q, or in a local hardware store, or is it all specialised/mailorder stuff? Ben Lawrance
If I remember correctly, after having a conversation with one of the guys at Turbosound (on the phone) I seem to recall them saying they use Aldcroft paint. 2p in the pot.
