Not sure how thick you can get EL (Electro-Luminescent) wire these days, but the stuff I have knocking around (about 2mm, I think) certainly can...

May very well not be big enough for any large scale project though...

I put this together out of flexible neon for Curve's production of Chicago back in 2013...I can't really remember, but I think lots of end caps, black cable, and black wrap were all involved...it also lit up 'VELMA' in blue, but under show conditions and the right lighting, you couldn't see whichever wasn't on:

Side note: This production was nominated for 'Best Musical Production' at the 2014 UK Theatre Awards. Awkwardly, it was beaten by the National Youth Music Theatre's production of 'Brass', for whom I was working as a technical co-ordinator and tutor to their young tech team at the time! 😁
