Stand adaptors

I have a couple of wind-up stands with 32mm poles. I want to fit a 1m "T bar" aluminium scaffold pole to the top, to hang a couple of generic lanterns (source 4 size).

What gubbins do I need to do the job properly?

Last time I hired something like this, I think there was a cast sleeve on the vertical pole which took a 28mm spigot, and that had a "big-ben"-style clamp on the top to take the staff pole.

What's the right name for all of these bits?

Would a 32mm "cap" casting (eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304157785340 ) with a half coupler be stable ?

Nope, been there tried that, the 10mm bolt is the wobble point regardless how tight you do it up.Can you get a 28mm spigot receivers for your stands? If so doughty T57225 is the answer

Personally I prefer something with a deeper socket or a more positive clamp arangement and a larger weight bearing surface to keep the T-bar stable and level.

That said, if the load is balanced the stability is not a big issue and I've seen a surprising number of scaf poles drilled 10mm and bolted directly to those sockets (and confess I've done it myself for some lightweight LED Pars.

For mobile disco type applications a 25mm square tube drilled every say 100mm and mounted that way was extremely popular and no need for hook clamps etc.

with a 19mm spigot on a half coupler, or the bigger size for a Big Ben

If the 32/38mm isn't a tight fit it will wobble on the top of the stand BUT it seems to wobble much less if the tightening screw is parallel with the T bar so there's at least a flat edge pinched up in the direction of the wobble

Or it looks like you can get it in one piece for 32mm also

This is what I now use (though a different make half-coupler), but I also have some very short lengths of aluminium scaff with a 3/8" bolt screwed through them to take steel spigots.

Even better.
