£6.99 x 12 = £84 which leaves a little to get it up and running.

We did something similar on remote controlled cars for a school play. The one we used came from a pound shop with 900mm of (£3.99 IIRC) as did the battery banks about the size of disposable lighters and got a discount as we were cheeky enough to ask the price of 20 of each. They were IR which proved to be good enough for our need, shop around for radio versions, they do exist. Also the bits are available individually.

Admittedly not DMX etc compatible but they are cheap.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

We have decided we are going to go for an easier option and use some wired strip instead. Which brings me on to another question and please excuse my lack of experience in this kind of thing…

So I have some 12V 14.4W RGBW tape, and a 24 channel decoder with a max output of 3A per channel. I’m wanting to power 8 lengths of strip from this, hoping for them to be 5 metres each. I am unsure of the best way to power this, which kind of driver I should get and what it needs to be.

I am sure there can be a compromise in terms of how many strips and the length but I just want to know what is the most I can run with that strip and one or two drivers.

Many thanks

Is that 14.4W per metre? How many LEDs per metre - it's normally 30 or 60.

If 60 LEDs per metre then it takes 1.2 amps per colour for each metre of tape (which is 14.4W per colour). If you mix a colour using more than one of R/G/B/W then obviously the current demanded from the power supply goes up, but the current per channel on the driver doesn't.

In other words with your 3A per channel driver, you could only run about 2.5 metres of tape per output.
