TomHoward
Afternoon allI am needing to make a fake rock (Junior version of Lion King) - like a short set of treads dressed in some kind of moulding. I am comfortable with the subframe, which will either be an off the shelf set of decking treads on castors, or a welded subframe depending on final size, but I need some kind of material to cover the main frontage with. It needs to have a couple of ledges which can be stood/sat on, and climbed up the face as well - so the material needs to be hardwearing and strong enough to scramble/stand on over a small span.May main concern is what to use for the textured finish - fibreglass? papier mache? plaster? Any ideas welcome
madorangepanda
Fibreglass and sprayed concrete are commonly used for climbing walls and could achieve the effect you're looking for. One of these companies may be able to help http://www.cwma.co.uk/members or at least give a few ideas.
Jivemaster
Painted hessian formed to shape and filled with self foaming resin. Assemble some roof insulating foam and carve and paint it?
kerry davies
I have wanted to have an excuse to get in touch with this Valleys company for a while now. It is more like "real"rock on a roll and the uses are endless. I would be tempted to try scrounging some offcuts and scraps to play with. Who knows they might be up for developing new markets? adamharman
The problem with foam insulation or expanding foam is that they'e quite brittle and bits will break off exposing the yellow colour. Fibreglass will give you a much more durable surface, but you'll need to make the basic shape from foam / polystyrene / something else first as the glass matt won't support itself once soaked in resin until it cures. Have a look at http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/ if you haven't done fibreglass before, the website has some guides on various types of project.

Yet another example of it pre-existing in one form and a minuscule modification opening up whole new businesses and industries.
kerry davies
Just to add, had a lovely exchange of emails with ConcreteCanvas who are well into set building on films such as Prometheus and tell me the thinnest of the three "weights" they make is 5mm.
