amdram
We are doing Yeomen of the Guard and I've been asked if I can make Shadbolt's arquebus smoke as if it's just been fired when he makes his entrance. It's a non-firing prop but has quite a large bore barrel, so I could drop something down it...Does anyone know of a small, short-lived smoke effect I could use? I don't want it to look like an industrial chimney, but on the other hand it needs to be visible to the audience ;) Any suggestions much appreciated. alistermorton
A smoke capsule as use to check smoke detectors? Burns for about 10-15 seconds, produces a lot of smoke. Fill it with smoke from a maplin smoke in a can? One of these to fill it? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FIN0V8/giftfella-20 - cheaper than a Look Tiny and might do the job. ImagineerTom
E cig, attached to rubber bulb used as a mini smoke machine offstage to fill the barrel seconds before he goes on.
Jivemaster
Small piece of LeMaitre smoke pellet lit off stage and pushed down the barrel as needed -by small I mean about a fiftieth of a tablet, more than that Will give the industrial chimney effect. Ynot
Hmmm... Looking at this from a different angle, and ignoring artistic licence for a while - the actual firing of the arquebus is a significant time before Shadbolt arrives on the scene, so realistically there would be little or no smoking gun in fact. That said, assuming there is a reasonable volume of space in the weapon, I'd say that a burst of smoke from any basic fogger off stage, with a simple baffle (piece of card/hardboard/tin/whatever) to stop it escaping would do. Whip it away just as Wilfred comes on from the wings and that will give you as much if not more than you need.
kerry davies
Smoke matches from plumbing supplies? Like these? Saves winding up a smoke machine and come in small enough, cheap enough units to play around with in rehearsal. You could always use real black powder, shoot the director backstage and kill two birds with one stone, as it were.
