MisterJames
Alright Everyone, In terms of subwoofers... Is passive better or is active or is it jsut a case of it doesnt matter at all? Cheers James
RGSD
It all depends on your requirements! That is literally it. Passive - You need to carry amps around as an extra Active - Its all built in so all you need to carry is the cabinet!
MarkPAman
By passive or active do you mean "driven by an external amp" or "driven by a built in amp"? Are you interested in better sounding, louder, easier to set up, lighter to transport, or something else? Sorry, but the question is too broad to answer. :) A good version of one sort will be better than a bad version of the other.
TonyMitchell
If you are going to use the system outdoors where it may be exposed to the elements, unpowered boxes will be preferable to powered.

tolley1466
Active subs usually have a selectable crossover built in so no need for an 'external' crossover either :) Most passive subs have a set crossover point which you might not like too. johndenim
Most passive subs have a set crossover point which you might not like too. I'd say 'some' rather than most tolley. Some subs have no internal crossover at all.

FullRange
Also an 18" powered cab is going to be around 50 kgs! I think you can beat that! 109kg Single 18" passive. It's not the only one either. Weight does depend on what part of the market you're looking at.

greenalien
Active - you know the amp matches the speaker, and you only need to run signal leads to it which are cheaper than heavy duty speaker cable. However, you also have to run mains power, which might be a problem in the wet. Passive - size for size, it will be lighter and if the amp blows, you can more easily swap in a new one. Chris Beesley
There isnt a simple answer to this question - it all depends on what application you have for the sub and also which models you are looking at both on the sub and the amp (also budget restrictions). The guys here could go on for days with pro's and con's on the subject ... and still never reach a conclusion.

It's all about how you handle weights of that kind! As I say - it's all about the requirements.
