MarkPAman
What a crossover does, is split the sound into low parts & high parts. This means that you can send just the low parts to your sub & just the high parts to your tops. This will mean the tops can work more efficiently as they are not producing so much bass. As I said, if you get a sub with a crossover in it, as well as an amp you can connect: From you desk -> graphic -> sub input. The crossover in the sub will send the low parts to the sub's amp & the high parts to an output connector. So from the crossover output on the sub you run a signal cable up to the top cab(s). Many subs actually have two crossovers so that you can run one sub with two tops & the tops stay in stereo. There's some diagrams in Mackie's hook-up guide see pages 4 & 5 here. (This is not a recomendation for Mackie speakers, I just knew where to find some pictures!) Edited to put in the bit I forgot!
