Gareth A
Screwfix once used to do a brilliant thing called Metal Wash, which basically made metal go black. Was harmless to skin but good for making heads go black on bits of set, bolts etc that needed doing. it was just a paint on item. they have stopped making it now. Does anyone know anything else that can be used? Cheers
Frag_Me
Black metal paint springs to mind... what exactly did this product achieve which was superior to just painting the piece in question black?
musht
Chemical blackening gets into all the little crevices that paint might thin on, like screw heads. Try: http://www.knighton-tools.co.uk/acatalog/C...g_Solution.html http://www.chronos.ltd.uk/acatalog/Chronos...oducts_255.html
Jivemaster
Looking at the MSER sheet for the Knighton Tools product, Yes it makes metal black, BUT it is certainly not to be regarded as safe for skin contact. Though the suggested "gloves apron and face protection" are minimal. The dipping that the makers suggest may not be suited to your product/application requirement. Sadly all "chemical" products are vanishing from the market place due to public fears. Chemical blacking is far blacker and more matt than most other things. Simon Lewis
As Jivemaster points out, it's not that harmful, and when the solution is washed off, I doubt if the treated part is too problematic. Any fastener hardware that is "chemi-blacked" is likely to have undergone a similar process. I suspect that Screwfix discontinued it through poor sales rather than its chemical properties...? They stiil sell the wonderfully solvent based Gripfill ;-)

Safety data sheets aren't any use at all if you don't bother to read all the words! David
