kit from dome

Recommended Posts

I was thinking earlier today whilst driving... what was the final outcome for all of the lighting and sound kit from the dome? I remember seeing it for sale at a large london auctioneers. But was then told that it was all destroyed on purpose becuase the huge amount of second hand kit circulating could cause manufacturers problems!! anyone know? :rtfm:

I would imagine a lot of it ended up in bankruptcy sales; I was at the auction and a lot of it seemed to be going for more than the price of new gear! It was one of the craziest sales I've ever seen.

Yep - that's auctions for you.

I'd heard the same from a colleague who went down, but he just watched in amazement!

Always the same with auctions - if they're open to Joe public, it tends to get rather silly. Soooo many people fail to take a simple look at what they can get gear they're bidding for either new or 2nd hand from dealers (where there's some element of security) so when it comes to bidding for stuff they get carried away on the basis that if someone's bidding against them then it MUST still be a good deal..... Until it becomes clear that NEITHER bidder has a clue!!

See it all the time on Ebay - and there're a lot of Ebay sellers who rely on people's ignorance to post items at inflated prices compared to market values. Par cans for one - always gets me! If you look around the 2nd hand lists you can probably pick up half a dozen basic pars for around £5 to £10 each. You'll need a bubble, and possibly a wiring set, but neither of these are that expensive. But all too often you see cans advertised as 'buy it now' as 6 cans for £150. Ludicrous, but some peeps actually buy the stuff!

Digressing slightly, I've had lots of auction bargains - but as Ynot says, often things go for silly money. Also, a lot of the Joe Public buyers don't realise that you've got to add commission, and sometimes VAT, to the hammer price, so end up bidding 25% more than they really should.

Best bargain was a rack with 2x power amps (1 a yamaha P4500, the other a Phonic 600 per channel), and some outboard, all less than a year old, complete with original boxes and manuals, for 100 pounds. At the same auction I got a Mackie CFX-12 mixer, plus 2x SM-58s, plus a bag of XLRs, plus something else that I can't remember, for less than 200. I put the Phonic amp, the rack and the "something else", whatever it was, onto ebay, and covered my costs, so essentially I got the YAmaha amp, mackie mixer, 2x SM58s and some other bits and pieces for nothing....

The best bargains are to be had at the "non-specific" auctions, rather than specialist ones, cos there isn't enough specialist kit to interest the mainstream buyers. The items I listed were bought at an auction of fittings for a hotel that had closed - they were part of a karaoke install - but most of the things auctioned that day were pots and pans, chairs and tables.... so there were no other buyers looking for music gear.

I also got some as-new par64s, with bubbles, clamps and safeties, for a fiver each.

I bought a few selecon acclaims that were apparently ex-dome off ebay (cheaper than new but they werent great condition).

Thats the thing with auctions - you can get really good bargains sometimes but also sometimes get a load of tat for an over-inflated price. A few weeks before the above purchase I had won some for less that are as good as new with shutters, gobo holders etc etc.

Its pot luck really - and the time of day (and day of the week) really very the price.

Did a gig in Sunderland about two years ago for Creative Staging (London I think). Apparently they bought a load of Source 4 profiles and Pars etc from the dome. All the kit seemed in good condition and included all the accessories (shutters etc-always losing 'em!).

Does anyone know of any Auctions around the Midlands area?

Keep your eyes on the Stage Electrics web site - they often have one in Brum at some stage - ex hire and stuff they pick up as part-ex on installs etc.
