As I mentioned schools seem to have settled on 2 or 5 years which fits in with your comment. The document you link to will, I hope, give gounding for solution.

The fitings in the OP belonging to the hall/Church (although the Church don't seem to recognise that as they are a legacy of the defunct AmDram) simply hang there and pretty much unused so expecting 3 monthly testing is crazy. But if truth be known I think they basically don't want them to be there.

Not just excessive but how much time would be involved ? and people ? ladders ? or tower ? thats 2 or 3 people to bring them down + someone to open up ? heating ?   someone to test (I assume you in this case ? )

I was going to post what Tomo said, It's a battle maybe, but its not crazy. We had at college computers that didnt move, yet every year it was being insisted we tested them.

  2. One thing to remember about railings is that having them also means having them Do their job. Your staging company will have railings suitable and strong enough when installed correctly. NO point in having a fall protection that falls apart when you lean against it, or is at such a height it helps you fall. OR allows you to get stuck (there are building guides on how they should be constructed with distances of rails etc etc).

  3. Bit of an open question.

We have a tonne of LED cases now, the "usual" w90xh60xd60 + wheels. and need to store. We can stack 3 high but that takes lots of floor space and we have issues with pallet stands and them going under at that height.

Does anyone know of a palletstand part, im aware there are hundreds of type of stands but we will get to that later, that allows cases to be placed on safely, wheels down. We have boards across but that isnt really ok, and beams as an option also but those are not really ok either.

    Any ideas welcome.

    Thanks

It's a combination where if you buy a "main" (usually a sandwich or pasta salad), a "snack" (usually potato crisps or similar) and a drink, all from a specified restricted selection, you get them for a discounted price. The savings over buying the items individualy vary, but it can halve the cost of the purchase.

A good meal deal can be great. My otherhalf loves "triangle sandwiches" *  so meal deals are a win, but the ones she likes are the ones that make money.
My 1st job her ever we had a pretty good lunch, and surprised we had it even but it was not bad  - this is in the same building as work, and a rough idea of what is "normal" for about £10 including drink and salad https://ganymeden.se/ .

    * in sweden you dont do food on the go you have a meal, sandwiches, wraps, etc are rare but becoming a bit bigger. One time I got a tuna sandwich to discover it was 3 layers of bread, a sneeze of tuna, and roughly a field of lettuce, AND paid about £4 for the pleasure.  wraps etc can be up to about £6 if from a wh smiths type place. oddly we are very monopoly, there are maybe 2 brands of sandwiches that appear in ALL shops, 1 brand of pastrys.   if anyone wants to move and start a "triangle sandwich shop" im sure it would go well.

Black paracord is good, as are Lights4Fun and what Bryson says about time is right, you always need more, but why festoons? The wedding venue branch of our family use masses of sparkley-twinkley fairy lights in white, veritable flocks of uplighters and miles of ropelight with a very small fixed overhead rig over the dancefloor. Festoons they use for walkways around lakes, woodland and glamping pods.

I have a thing about festoons after running 12 kms of the stuff through woodland over hill and dale in the rain but for me it is a tad "industrial" for a classy wedding.

We were using 100m + years ago for weddings, the whole antique style lamp is really in STILL after however long its been about. "old" lamps have gone away (looking at you picklepatt et al) but the filament lamps are still going strong, and in the right place they look really nice, especially over a other room lighting options for barns etc.

    What about Burnshield burn blots?

    https://www.sja.org.uk/first-aid-supplies/first-aid-supplies-and-consumables/first-aid-dressings-and-pads/dressings/Pack-of-10-3.5ml-Burnshield-Blott-Sachets/

Last time first aid was mentioned, was a dislike for these, but not sure why?

Found them effective on soldering iron burns.

    what is it ?

What we have at home after I got given for post surgery is a plastic semi sticky mesh, its pretty expensive I think £10 for 4  smaller than palm size patches , but its designed to keep wet wounds away from bandages, like burns, but its great for road rash (small child got a nice big one a few weeks back and it was great)

Interesting, following this thread, that until today the blind & deaf have barely been considered; those with mental issues not at all. A huge number of us have disabilities of some sort; if we want to do something beyond our physical abilities we either have to find a work-round or decide it's not practicable (I've got all my fingers & toes, but I'm never going to be a concert pianist, but that's ok). There are backstage jobs that people with mobility issues can do well, without endangering others, e.g. DSM, lx or sound op, maybe even follow-spot, but pretending that everyone can do everything if only enough money is thrown around......?

We had a student with downs, I was told " of the highest level you could have" and he was really not capable. as much as he wanted.  We also had a student who was autistic , and also very high level, he was great when he needed to be but was not capable without the right support OR the people around. It was not until his final shows we worked out that if he drew for the time between calls he was great. and he was a GREAT spotter. Almost golem in his specific traits.

It is work, and it is possible, but its still "in reason"

I still remain that certain companies, some of which are in our industry, would do great with workers who were on spectrum to make cables, and yes they might need to employ a staff member who was 100% dedicated to supporting a hand full of staff, but I would promise those cables would be done, and done well, and they could have a 2nd test. But its a fulfilling job for someone.

  8. Have you asked the makers ?

I know there was a thread on here, QUITE a while back where someone had a cochlear implant and canford made a custom part for beltpack to implant, 1st of its kind if I remember and worked great.

I can imagine a maker would be up for making adaptions or have something made but not listed as its super custom.

CPR on any surface other than 'the floor' does not give the full qualification for first aid at work cert.

Yes, I believe you might be missing the other things. Responder in a chair, gaining access to the patient upstairs while taking a kit bag, removing said patient from bed,  THEN performing CPR.

I think it's a requirement these days that buildings are designed to be fully accessible.

I think its part of the law, to be open and accessible as possible, I am sure someone can find the words, and I expect it includes "within reason"

I recall doing a teaching course, Me, some people doing "im a manager and how do I teach people"  and a bunch of paramedics doing training to do first responders  (one of those box tickers as they had been teaching for AGES)

Part of the course was to "show to you can be accessible"  and they had to explain how to teach someone in a wheelchair. Teacher flat our refused to accept that they couldn't teach a first responder in a wheelchair how to do CPR on a patient on a bed up stairs.  There is a limit of "reason"

Ah the memories... I bought a Congo Jnr to replace a 520i that had a spectacular PSU failure (and collateral damage) the evening before it was announced that the original Strand had gone under (2005?). At the time IIRC the options were ETC Express, known to be end of life, Congo Jnr, GrandMA Ultra Light, which was way over budget, and Zero88 had something, Illusion500? I think the Ion was rumoured, but not available.

That sounds about right. 05/06 was tender for the venue I think so that would match up. IIR the replacement we got in 2013 was the orb. I'm not even sure if anyone reaches the heights of 500 series now?

I'm going to raise my hand and shyly admit I was one of those that did.... I found it got a bad reputation as there were a lot in venues that had simply not learnt it well at all. When I had one in a venue that did a fair amount of one night small scale theatre tours, I'd frequently have companies come in groaning that we had a Congo. I lost count of the times that we'd end up having a conversation along the lines of "wait I thought Congo couldn't do x" or "every time we used a Congo before this bit took forever to program, so how come that took 30s". I forget what those things were, but some were extremely basic, and I'll agree some things were in no way intuitively obvious!

Having said all that, do I want a Congo snr in my life now? No.

Absolutely, We had one, most people said the same. I some how swung training on it from ETC, and it really was a good desk, BUT it came at that time when the 520 was just out of manufacture, Strand had released the pallete, and the congo was "an option". But being AVAB people didnt know it well, or know how to change the syntax from what AVAB was, to "normal". I remember one company coming and having a right go thing about having it, when it took not time at all. the WORST thing about it was the remote that lit up buttons but not numbers, and was janky if it would work or not so every few lamps we had to turn off and back on.

  13. Depends on how far you want to go.

Options like hue and other zigbee is one, I like gledopto, bright and good and less than hue.

Control you could look at homeassistant, and a zigbee stick.   You need to programme it but you can find code online how to chase lights etc. as you will want a say to be turning the chase on and off, and just having them normal.

That would be maybe £200 for all the bits + time

  14. I guess it depends, We were not "fully accessible" but IIR we had wider doors all over, control room was big enough to use a chair in for sure. ground control fly bars, Focus would be an issue unless you bounced. It would need someone to start the work with soca across from the stage boxes in the roof, and floor boxes not exactly easy to get to from a chair. Possible yes, perfect, no.

  15. So I did a show 8?years ago , cannot remember anything about it, other than black out .

    B L A C K  O U T

I mean your hand cannot be seen infront of your face after 10 mins of sitting in the dark.

    B L A C K  O U T

The rig was a day putting foil on windows, then tape on the micro holes that you get, tape on the cracks on the floor. Emergency lights were drained and swapped for ones that were button triggered , and their LEDS were taped. There was a really big RA about how it would work with a fire, given the whole eye adjustment issues also.

There is a level of "acceptable" IF your show needs a blackout of some form more than a normal one, you need to talk to the venue. We had a space that a blackout was almost impossible. and in another venue the designers cleverly placed exit lights right at the entrance BESIDE the stage, and another in each wing roughly 1m from the stage, though those were fixed.

Yes I think the peri's teach in the same room each time.

Methinks I need to discuss the pitfalls with the Director of Music and strongly suggest the use of a good old cable 🙂

Be aware, a cable is going to run the risk of going missing A LOT. iPhones don't have 3.5mm often, only lighting, and many android phones have usbc now. Adapter city.

  17. I have not used them but a friend has, Ikea Symfonisk are sonos speakers and you can batch "pair" them with wifi/bluetooth so in theory you could have A room and B room with 4 speakers each. They are roughly the same price as CPC ones though. How that would work with security and avoiding students being students I am not sure. but the same goes for bluetooth. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/customer-service/product-support/symfonisk/how-to-use-symfonisk-pub180e00a9

If you have the amps and speakers already you could in theory just use a bluetooth RX on an amp.  But I have found "most" bluetooth RX take maybe 2 or 4 devices saved at most which makes it a pain.

  18. For the longest time we have used case labels cut up to fit on peli cases. In fact the boss worked out the perfect cuts to do top and side + a front tag with 1 label as it doesnt sit flat.

What kind of items ? and long lasting ?
We have just got a brother td4420dn for doing case content lists, and also use now for pallets and place labels as needed. the current tape isnt super lasting but I hear they have some strong stuff and plastic type also

I'd not even thought of return for service issues!

I THINK return, fix, get back is different to return, new item sent in place.

I also would home someone like Thomann would deal with it, uk service place etc.

    Ah, temporary importation.

It's a nightmare. Some carriers specifically exclude carrying items for temporary importation because of the paperwork problems. And it's not just UK-EU that is the problems. I've had kit returned from the US where it had been sent for repair, having been refused customs clearance, because there wasn't sufficient evidence that it'd been made in the US. Even though it's emblazoned with 'Proudly Made In The USA'.

I have no idea anymore. All I know is that some how its still less to purchase a number of items in the UK. AND companies like BM still dont have a EU hole.

It’s a little uncertain now if we are all potentially waiting for a bill. The suppliers pay the VAT due on import, for us. No doubt the big firms do, but you need to be very careful. Looking at one invoice with VAT at 20% shown clearly on it comes from one of the Nordic countries. I see no GB VAT number, just a mention of VAT. Could it be their VAT? If so, I’ve not paid UK VAT at all. I buy lots of stock from China and some have my VAT number, so don’t add VAT at their end, but that delivery that used to mean parcelforce or UPD wanted money from me, now arrives without VAT sometimes. I used to get small 2Kg packages in a big box, maybe ten or twenty in each one, and these always had VAT added by the carrier paid before or after delivery. Shipping costs now mean I get from two suppliers, individual parcels as it’s now cheaper by a long way. This means a four grand order should have £800 due in VAT, and nobody is collecting it? In my accounting software, I’m not actually sure how I account for this? I suppose I could raise an invoice for zero, and manually add a VAT amount, but surely there should be a demand for the tax, not a reliance on the purchaser to add it and pay it? If at the end of march, I suddenly get an invoice from UPS for the past three months deliveries, how would I then cancel my own voluntary payment? It’s a mess.

    Ah yes maybe ?

I had to send a camera (2 actually) for service to blackmagic UK one in may and one in september. I sent, as far as I can tell the same method both times, using Schenker, who passed to GDL who passed to parcelforce. a few weeks back schenker served us with a bill from parcelforce for the import as BM were not paying it.
1 - not sure why there was a bill as it was RMA. BUT I know there is a limit of value before you HAVE to pay RMA - service- anything
2- why did we get a bill for the september package but not the march one?
3 - will we get one for march - schenker said they get dumps of uk invoices never logical, packages from march, october, june all mixed up sender or receiver makes no difference.

So we have a bill of about £500 for a RMA + £1000+ parts which frankly is a bit much but what can you do
