DMX Cable

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm after some DMX cable, which I was going to make up myself. I want my kit to be uniform, and already have some red DMX off SLX. So, could someone tell me the type/name of the DMX cable they would recommend, and tell me who does it in red? I would get some off Stage Electrics, but they aren't the chepest. Was hoping that CPC or RS do the right type of cable, but I am not sure what it is called.

Cheers :uni:

Make sure you buy a specific type of cable from the company, rather than simply specifying just 'DMX' cable. I bought some 'DMX' cable from a well-known reputable company and was sent Van Damme mic cable instead (bandits!).

See this topic for more details.

PM me if you want to know which comepany it was...

This has been covered various times before. Please try and use the search function before posting next time.

Other topics here, here, here, here and probably numerous others.

I also found some cheap cable, phoned up the company and they admitted it was mic cable. Also the final stuff I ended up with from Canford wasn't that great to be honest, it was very un-flexible, but you get what you pay for.

Regarding the specification basically it needs to have an impedance of 110 ohms. AES/EBU cable is similar and will be suitable. Cat 5 can also be used.

Hi,

Oddly enough, the first batch of DMX cables we ever bought were red (and still going strong)! Just been for a look at it and unfortunately it has no identifiers on it anywhere. If memory serves me right it was ProPlex cable, company I bought it from doesn't exist anymore sadly (?!) but places like AC lighting or TMB deal in ProPlex so you could try there - not sure whether the red is still available though.

I would also echo what Roy said in the previous post, make sure you don't get sold mic cable rebadged as 'DMX cable' with a price tag to match, there are some out there who do just that...

USITT who set the DMX standard say "...twisted pair, 120 ohm, shielded EIA485 cable..."

Edit

Sorry Peter, I was obviously in the middle of mine when you posted yours - wasn't inteded to be a repetition of your message.
