IMHO it is better to start in a vector package (like Illustrator) as the artwork you produce is then infinitely scaleable.

A logo made at even reasonably high resolution in Photoshop will look very pixellated when you have to blow it up to fit on a billboard or vehicle signage. And it's very hard to predict where a logo could be used in future...

I just rent this work out to people on Fiverr.com - so much easier.

I've been tempted by services like that before. How's your experience been? I've found that more often than not external people can come up with something that looks good and theoretically fulfils the brief, but is miles away from what we'd intended.

Split the job into two parts.

1/ Having the idea -that you LIKE, and think you will do in 5 - 10 years time.

2/ Pass a sketch of your idea to someone to execute your design. AND RENDER it in several formats (vector, pixel, RGB, CMYK etc) This way you can pick the format of your chosen design to suit the media and scale of any image needed.

If you don't know what you want then you'll likely never be satisfied with any design.

Maybe also consider how it will work on white (headed paper) and black (flightcases etc)

I have used fiverr about 6-7 times, for various projects.

Tips:

Never budget $5. Budget $20-25 (to allow for multi vendor, and re-works)

Use more than one person - don't tie to one

Research the vendors - find one with a good range in their portfolio, ideally with "stuff you like" in it - so you can say "I want it a bit like that one".

Do not get disappointed when you dont get what you want/expect - you will learn in time that the better the brief you provide, with good examples/sketches, the better the output.

Make sure you specify that you require, as part of the price, a vector file, a JPG, and a PNG - that way you can use the finished product for *anything*.

Hope this helps.

Fiverr is a great option and I have used that before many times for different types of services, The key to getting the good results/output make sure to find the right candidate for the right job, Few people may seem to have many 5 star ratings but make sure their accounts are old enough, There are many new accounts there who pay others to rate them 5 stars so they can start getting the orders by clients too. Also, I'll recommend everyone to contact multiple providers about your requirements then decide regarding their response, It can also make many things clear.

If you're just looking for vector software then Inkscape is free and fairly powerful. Like all those programs it has a steep learning curve.

I've always found it best to pay a few quid to get someone who can design properly to do it.
