Jevans
A couple of weeks into being TM at my new haunt: does anyone know of any theatre anywhere (indeed, anywhere in the world) that still have an operational safety curtain that rises from the floor rather than coming in from the flys? We're wondering if the ADC Cambridge is actually the only one!

Jevans
That's a good point, I think it does...
J Pearce
Barbican has the teeth thing that comes up and down meeting in the middle.
the kid
Barbican has the teeth thing that comes up and down meeting in the middle. If they don't have giant teeth on it (either painted in UV or not) its not worth it.
Renny
I'd imagine people don't have them rising up as in the event of total power loss in the building you won't be able to depend on gravity for it to come in.

It could be arranged such that the falling of a weight, would raise the curtain by means of a simple arrangement of chains and pulleys. I have seen a fire shutter in a warehouse that worked thus. Jivemaster
No, I've never seen one. It's quite possible that the split iron is it's own counterweight, - the descending top part raises the ascending lower part - otherwise there needs to be a big brake somewhere. andy_s
Just come out of the Barbican, and they didn't show the iron, so I can't confirm whether it still comes out of the floor. It certainly used to; I remember being very impressed when I first went there in 1982 or 3.

Yes, that's how ours works. There's no power required for raising or lowering.
J Pearce
The barbican iron did the up and down teeth thing when I was there to endure Cumberbatch spoiling a perfectly good bit of Shakespeare last year.
delicolor
Yes, went to the Barbican last year for the ABTT new grid visit and they graciously demonstrated the Iron for us, out from the stage and in from the stalls. Roughly the bottom third of it rises. It has to be the shiniest safety curtain ever.
