DanSteely Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Hi All,I'm looking at stripping/polishing and old 743. Quick question is the green paint of the body paint or stove enamel of some sort? Many thanks
csg Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 A colleague of mine was looking at doing the same to some green patt 123's. Concerned to the composition of the paint he did some research, and apparently the green paint contains both lead and arsenic - so you will want to be careful with any dust...
Dave m Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Having spent ages taking the paint off a 23 with stripper and a wheel, I'd se if you could get it soda blasted by a local placeThere was a place on eBay offering blasting and polishing of 23's for around £60 which is good value to me, considering the time it took me to do oneI do up classic bikes as a hobby so am no stranger to this kind of work

DanSteely Posted March 12, 2016 Author Posted March 12, 2016 Many thanks all for the information. I'd noticed the eBay polishing service in the past but couldn't find it again when searched. The Patt 23 looks amazing. thanks again.
paulears Posted March 12, 2016 Posted March 12, 2016 The green textured paint comes off fairly easily on the flat panels but is a real pain on the folded edges unless you really dismantle them and do it properly. The cast lens mount polishes up nicely.
Junior8 Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 It's green texture stove enamel. Dismantle it completely and take the paint finished parts to someone with a stripper tank
Dave m Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 743's are steel so a tank is a good idea23's and 123's are alloy and will dissolve if immersed in caustic so make sure what stripper they useI do up old motorbikes and the topic comes up quite often I have all the gear to polish but taking time/effort into account, a pro can do a better job reasonably for the moneyConvenience doing it yourself, but it takes almost a day or two that can be better spent earning the cash to pay somebody.Unless you do it for the self satisfaction
