IA76
Hi I need a screen for a shop window that will be connected to a pc to display various things. The problem is for most of the day the sun shines straight on to the window. To combat this I was told I need a transflective screen but are there any alternatives? timsabre
I'm after a flat screen. TV? I've tried to do this both with a special rear-projection screen designed for shop window uselike this and a 42" LCD monitor, and my conclusion is that it is impossible to compete with direct sunlight. Even if the sunlight does not reach the screen surface itself, the reflections on the window make it impossible to read. The only thing which might work is one of the very high-resolution (4mm pitch) LED video screens like this. But they are extremely expensive. Transreflective LCD monitors are available but only in small sizes, not in "window display" sizes. And they are pretty expensive as well.
Pete McCrea
If you buy a specific Public Display panel from the likes of Panasonic/Phillips/LG/NEC etc then they are designed to work in the higher ambient light levels of shop fronts. However they are considerably more money than the Teknika 42" LCD you'll find in Tescos, but are designed for the job, have a proper warranty and come with built in scheduling for auto on off. Dave m
also, proper display screens can run from internal memory and display say, a powerpoint, between certain hours without the need for a separate PC. Apart from one to create the PP first
AHYoung
The ops asked about a transreflective display which would be the right tool for the job, but as far as im aware, they seemed to just disappear from the market a while ago, probably due to being expensive. they did have the obvious advantage of getting brighter the more the sun shone on them, but ultimately other than the small screens in atms etc, the market for larger panels was probably more niche that the major players thought and the products seemed to just disappear. Id suggest that you need to look at a screen that produces 700cd/m2 to stand a chance { that's 3 times brighter than a telly} and has an anti glare coatingand if that's not bright enough, you can get 1500 cdm2 units which are almost led wall bright. none of these will be argos priced. Its definitely a situation where is be dealing with local specialists as they will be able to demo something onsite, but you will have to be prepared to pay a premium, but at least you will be buying a solution that works.
