Jon T
For CAD I use Draftsight, is available for MAC and PC, is 100% Free. No stock symbols but can import most dxf,dwg files so could create a library of your own.

J Pearce
Lxfree is also available for windows and Linux, use lxfree for java.My students find it pretty quick to learn, though the software does have a few odd quirks.
Wernlund
Visualisation is very useful for two situations, (1) to help sell a job/design to a client, and (2) to preprogram a show if there will be no time at the venue - a few palette tweaks once it's rigged and you're off. When we went 3D with Capture back in the nineties, the point of the visualization was actually neither. It was to give the user a three dimensional representation of the room in which it would be easier to plan projection angles, coverage and gobo projections - especially when working with unfamiliar venues or with new equipment. Today pencils and stencils may seem quaint and strangely romantic, but I for one remember how ugly it got after you've used that eraser a fourth time. Then things went moving lights and all bananas - so of course, if you have the luxury of simply throwing in 40 moving lights, then caring about projection angles of conventionals suddenly seems somewhat medieval. :-) Cheers,Lars Wernlund / Capture Sweden
