Hi everyone, bit of a long shot this one.We have had donated to our historically interesting stock,a pair of Mole Rochardson pups(6"),I've been told they contain asbestos, but where? The only place I think is in the tape that raps round the circlip that holds the lens in.Any help guys???

Old kit I've refurbed has these pads fitted to many of them, and the heat over the years has tended to harden them to the state where they don't have any loose fibres, so I've always just put them back carefully. The worst asbestos parts are the cables - that can be difficult. I had a bag of these things hanging around for ages not knowing quite what to do with them, but near me asbestos removers were working and I gave the bag to them and they took it away for me with all the other stuff.

It might be worth your while having a read around the HSE website as there is some useful info on planning and handling asbestos related work. A lot would possibly be OTT, both might be of use.

No, thank you,any info most welcome as apart from their reputation, I know nothing of the lantern itself, being what I believe a predominately film/studio lantern. Rather than a theatre lantern, which I have a fair deal of reference material available.I would like to refurb these rather than let them go to one of the hyper inflated price merchants(i.e. a patt123, going for £300 on Bargain hunt),so any help is most welcome! Thanks

I'm greatfull to my fellow BR's for the info regards this lantern.I need to know,I'm I all right to remove the pad underneath the lamp holder, and would it effect the function of the lantern? Being asthmatic, I'm concerned about the presents of asbestos and would very like to use these operationally.Regards Roy

Almost 30 years ago, I salvaged about twenty of these from a skip. They had been scrapped by Scottish Television when Studio A in Cowcaddens (long since demolished) was being refurbished. The asbestos rope around the lenses can be replaced with glass fibre rope which is used for door seals on log burning stoves (yes, we had one of those at the time too). They were designed for 1k lamps but can be fitted with 650W lamps IIRC. Can't remember the lamp code, but I only finally dumped all the remaining 1k lamps when we moved house about 10 years ago.

I managed to cannibalise enough parts to build sixteen good lanterns and they did many more years of service in Balfron High School before the new school was built and the old building was demolished.

Have fun.

I'd leave it well alone, if I were you. We discovered similar asbestos discs underneath the lampholders in various old Strand lanterns, and after assessment it was determined that some were beyond economic salvage, and those that were salvageable had to have the asbestos removed by a specialist contractor.

Define ok.

Will the world suddenly implode? No.

Will you increase your exposure to asbestos and therefore increase your risk of lung related disease and asbestosis? Quite possibly if the pads are at all damaged and leaking fibres.

Many councils are fine with people DIY dismantling low risk asbestos sheet sheds, as long as care is taken not to break sheets and the material is properly disposed of.

Take your choice and live with it. Either lose the fresnels or take it out and take the risk. I doubt anyone will categorically say it is ok, too much liability!

Well, I'm still here and don't suffer from asbestosis. Even that long ago I did take precautions against inhaling any dust at all.
