Update 4:

Spoke to a loveley lady called Pam Clarke at Devlin (who basically took over Alphameric) and she has supplied me, via email, a copy of the software to program to keyboard so all I've got to do now is get it how I want it (and I'm about to start version 2!)

Will post pictures when it's done and grateful and heartfelt thanks to all who've helped

Cheers

Yes.. I see what you did there... I dont know if I would call it a custom keyboard though? :)

Maybe I should call it "modded keyboard" instead of custom..My point is that it is a very cheap way. Costs practically nothing.

On the theme of custom keyboards, I made an Arcade-style interface a few years back which outputs key commands and could be handy for this kind of thing. Originally I made it for use with Ableton, but I haven't given it much action. Maybe it's one for the workshop or another thread if there's interest? It wasn't expensive to make and it's been reliable so far!

I it would be possible to do it that way, maybe cheaper, but I used an X-Arcade interface designed for use with arcade-style switches. Makes the wiring much more of a case of plugging them in than soldering every connection and you can have a few different programmable layers. Here's one of the inside of it...

I think some arcade style joysticks would make a cool addition!

I'm just starting to learn my way around MagicQ and just bought a 8x16 (128 key) POS keyboard as I'm already finding it hard to do anything with just mouse and normal keyboard. Just trying to sus out a good layout, this is what I have so far...

MagicQ Keyboard Layout

I'm really not sure what keys I need and what I can just do away with. I'd rather not have it too cluttered with keys I'm almost never going to use when programming. I figure I'll leave a chunk of space on the left for flash/cue/macro buttons. Anyone with a lot more experience using MagicQ than me want to chip in? I'm almost tempted to just do away with trying to having alphabetic on there and just run a compact keyboard along with it. would make things nicer....

There's a lot to be said for keeping the alpha-numeric entry side separate from the control side in my opinion, so a compact qwerty keyboard separate from the main programming keyboard makes sense to me. I've not used magicQ (just downloaded it to learn) but the last two desks I've used (Strand 300, ETC Ion) have had a separate qwerty keyboard tucked out of the way when it's not needed so you can concentrate on the dedicated keys for programming/editing/operating

There's probably something to be said for broadly emulating the layout of buttons on a real Chamsys desk and/or the software - familiarity with their relative positions will help find your way around it quicker.

As I've come late to the party. Have a look at the Countour Shuttle Pro usb puck thing. They do the style sheet for you to custom the top buttons, depending on how many you need. I have used one of these for years running SCS software on the pc without any problems..
