Earlier this year we made the decision to sell our M7CL and buy an SD9.

We went for the SD9 with dual power supplies and the extended d-rack.

I have to say that it's the best decision I've made all year - the DiGiCo is streets ahead in my opinion.

We never had a problem with our M7, apart from it being disliked by other engineers!

While in the past I have been a bit of an M7-hater (because of sound quality) I have always admired its ease of use and quick setup. I recently was on a gig with an M7-ES, and I have to say, the quality of the pre-amps is significantly improved in my opinion. I think the new ES stageboxes are a nice step up in quality.

The iLive is cool, and the SD9 looks great - provided the software is not as buggy and crash-prone as the SD8.

If you've not tried out one of the Vi desks, and can find someone to do you a demo / loan, take it up - they're lovely to mix on, and the majority of people I've shown round the desk love it too. The main drawback people have mentioned to me about the desk is that it doesn't support protools, which if you're not already using, probably isn't that much of a problem.

Second drawback (which may also be a biggie depending on how rider friendly you need the desk) is the uncommonness of the desk and the number of people who've worked on them, which is a shame as IMHO it's a great desk.

Adlib Audio are doing a few demo days I think. SSE did theirs earlier this month...

If I was having a desk for me to use personally and that I was paying for, there's no way I'd buy an M7. Despite the lack of touchscreen, I think the LS9 has a better interface. Even if you don't agree, then it's pretty difficult to justify paying twice as much money for the M7 which has more or less the same features (although it's less powerful) and is bigger.

However, if I had the money for an M7, I'd certainly be looking at the newer offerings. Get yourself a demo of the SD9 and Vi1 and see what you think. Then you can decide between those (and perhaps A&H) and the lower priced LS9/M400s and put your money where you think it's most sensible. Presumably if you're paying and you haven't got to satisfy anyone else's whims, then the cheapest option is probably the best!

I have been looking at the vi1 today and really like the 'stand alone' aspect of not having a specialist stage-box setup. although I will invest in a cat5 distro, the ability to use my existing multicore's is appealing. Also, I am moving further away from the M7 option and even the LS9. I think an M400 is pretty versatile although the need for a Reac multi (or two) limits the possibilities.

The race is now on between the SD9, Vi1 and I-Live (despite the fact that I have road-tested none of them!!!)

That's quite a stretch to call it less powerful. AFAIK the only advantage the LS9 has is the ability to expand to 64 full featured input channels, while the M7 is limited to the 56 available on the top layer. Once you have used those slots for expansion they are no longer available as additional I/O to multi tracks, or alternative inputs.

I think the LS9 has about the worst UI of any digital console I have used, and would much rather use an M7.

There are certainly newer sexier digital consoles today than the M7, but the LS9 ain't one of them.

Bold added to quote. I may have used one in the past, but fortunately I don't remember. ;)

We have and o1v at work and an m7. My boss was trying to get them to replace the o1v with an LS9 I think I've convinced him otherwise.... On another note Out of the vi, Sd9 and the Allen and Heath I wouldn't hesitate in putting my cash into the lovely folks at Digicos hands the moment I can afford one of those lovely red snappers I'll have one......

Well everyone's entitled an opinion! Personally I hate the M7. Its default home screen winds me up with its uselessness. And it seems needlessly expensive compared to the LS9. Less so now that the LS9 has got more expensive. You used to be able to buy 3 LS9s for 1 M7.
