tomrbland
Hi, I am after a book or web guide that covers the basics in Audio electronics looking at RC networks, compressors, gates etc. I am wanting to do some experiments on building simple compressors etc. I am going in to the audio world so I thought I should know exactly how the gear works and why! Does anyone know of any good guides/books/tutorials? CheersTom
Brian
That's a huge range to cover. Whilst you might find such a book I doubt it'll give you enough background to design a compressor from scratch. And to be honest no-one does these days. Have a look around Profusion's website as they sell a load of specialised chips, something like the THAT4301 will do a compressor/limiter in one chip! For audio books have a look at titles by Doug Self or John Lindsey Hood.
musht
John Linsley Hood, or JLH as some of an age might remember him from ETI magazine http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?u...mp;x=9&y=
tomrbland
That's a huge range to cover. And to be honest no-one does these days.Yeah I know its a big range, but I believe in knowing the basics. It surprises me the amount of students doing computing at my college that don't know assembly. I strongly believe that you need to know the roots of something to properly understand how it works and to be able to use it efficiently. Which is my reasoning behind all this really. Some one mentioned the Audio Electronics Cook Books to me? Thanks for all your input.
musht
JLH is worth serching out as lot of his articles have been republished on the web, by its nature tends to actually look at the engineering rather than stray into the audiophool end. http://www.angelfire.com/sd/paulkemble/sound3.html Compressors , limiters, gates etc are probably all modelled in DSP chips nowadays and degree maths with understanding of fast Fourier transforms probably more use in understanding them than bias voltage on a BC108, but preamp design is still the black art it ever was. Dmills
Add "The Art of Electronics" to the list, starts with the basics and goes far enough to cover things like noise calculations and PLL design. Not too heavy on the math. Regards, Dan.
