You are doing the right thing, going into music shops and having a listen.

Not if you dont know what your looking for :)

And finally I would try to go to more lighting and sound based shops/showrooms, as the salesmen/women will have a much better knowledge of the gear and also what sort of things they should be showing you and recommending to you.

Rich

Bit of a contradiction that Rich! the best way for the OP IS to have a look at as many show rooms as possible and listen to as much as possible. BUT Be very wary of listening to sales people they tend to just want to sell you as much as possible! and that may not be what you need.

Sorry I ment go to showrooms once he has decided what he wants from his cabs.

Thanks guys

I have been thinking about what I "realy" need the cabs for. I can get accsess to full 5/6KW Mackie PA rigs right down to a pair of jb systems 15inch cabs from terralec. I have decided im going to save my money, get myself a nice desk that I like the sound of e.c.t and as I have saved for a nice desk borrow pa off verious people/my school untill I have enough money for some realy nice cabs and not some £200 cheap cabs that are "ok".

as for checking out the 2nd hand market I would but I realy dont know what im looking for in the way of cabs so dont see the point in looking in to buying something that, while it may be very nice kit, I will rarely use. However that dosent meen I am going to stop looking at cabs and listing to them in store!

with regards to were I went in to listen to them, it was a Sound and Lighting specialist shop but didnt have a huge selection to listen to, mostly beringer stuff so not alot to chose from allthow I still had no idea what I was looking for.

I am going to get the mackies and yamahas out when I go back to school, along with the skytechs and beringer and see if I can tell the diffrence between the cabs. this should give me some idea of what to expect when I eventualy go in to a larger store to listen to "better" cabs in a year or so.

Thanks for all your help

Tom

did you say school? :s

not being ageist here or anything, but how do you intend to cart all this stuff round? I've been passionate about PA etc since school, but I never had the money for a PA, let alone considered how I was supposed to cart it around!

also, between now and then I've learned so, so much about all the rights and wrongs of everything PA. I'm still learning now, but I'd seriously step back and consider how serious you are about the whole PA business and how sure you are about what you buy. I've wasted hundreds of pounds before on things I dont really want/need.

EDIT: just to add, I'd see how long you can keep borrowing stuff for - whats the point in buying stuff if you can borrow it for free, or on the cheap?

My school have said to me that as I do so much for them and they are not aloud to pay me, I can borrow more or less anything I need for my gigs in the way of sound equptment. There are a few exceptions which are like this:

I can not borrow the mackies unless there is a performer linked to the school: ie the school have a band playing at the gig or have a singer/dancer e.c.t

I can not borrow the big Soundcraft desk as it is used in the Recording Studion day in day out.

I have to return all equptment asap

How ever my Teacher/Tech manager has said to me he will not charge me to borrow any of his sound/lighting equptment and he said if I give him petrol money he will transport the equptment to gig for me.

I also know more people who have offered simaler things and will not charge me because I am a lucky bugger! (althow some of the kit I would not borrow if I had a decent hire budjet for the gig)

As for transport, My mum and dad have said they will provide transport in our car (fairly large Vaxhall Zafira (large because my teacher has an astra and fits all his mackie pa and lighing kit in there)) and my grandad and uncle have also offerd me transport in a van and a Crysler Voyeger.

I understand why you put the :s at the start of your post as even when I see the word school I also think :S! how ever my school are on a fairly large budjet for the equptment we have and as I am incharge of the people who use the equptment I make sure it is well looked after and gets serviced offten.

Thanks for the tip at the bottom and I hope to be able to borrow the kit for a long time untill I have substantual high quailty kit for (hopefully) for my Business but that is a long way off.

As to your advice on not buying now untill ive learnt more and know more about the equptment that I would waste money on........ that is exactly what I was thinking after I posted that post. The reaso why I was thinking of buying a desk is because I have had advice from lots of diffrent people telling me that I should save my money, buy something that I like using and know inside out and hire what ever else I need for gig. This way I get to use a nice desk that I like and feel comftorbal using and hire the mics, PA, effects e.c.t. I am not sure if I realy want to do that now as I am realy tight with money and wont buy anything untill im sure I cant get something better. And alot of people telling me not to waste my money when I have little experiance has put me off this aswell.

Thanks for helping me not to make a decision I will regret

I think that I will save, learn on what I have and borrow and then when I have more experiance and larger budjet eventualy buy something that I will use to its full potential.

Thanks

Tom

Hi mate,

I also, like you, started out at a very young age (started at 8) but diddnt own gear till I was 16. Even then it was only a small pair of 12" celestion cabs and a mackie fr1400m Amplifier, which I still own and occasionaly use now. However I think the biggest step for me was getting in with such a large company. I did my work experience there, which you will have coming up soon right?, and they offered me a job for when I was 16. I have never learnt so much in such a short space of time as I did when I first started working for them. I got to use an amazing amount of kit from all different budget ranges and the warehouse manager was amazing to me, he kind of took me under his wing and made sure that I was a knowlageable as most of the staff that worked there, and as time has progressed my knowlage has grown more and more.

Basically what im trying to get across here is get yourself in with a big, friendly company and make a good impression, there could be a job at the end of it that could change all of your carrer prospects, in whcih direction I dont know but it will give you a very real insight into the indrustry.

Good luck

Rich

the extent of what I did at school was sound for the theatre productions. through college and my degree I took a more electronics based approach, but 6 months into my degree I packed it in and started an HND in sound engineering instead. by this point I was 20 years old. you'd be wise to save your money for a while. if you can rack up 5 or 6 grand in savings you can get one hell of a system! keep yourself in the loop though.

Well said Mervaka,

When I first got interested in sound, (at around 14 when I learned to play the guitar)

I had to make do with an old combi with x2 10" eminence drivers, the amp eventually died so I decided to experiment with hifi amps, eq, crossovers,

basically anything electronic I could attach a guitar to!

I am always wondering, "what is going to be the next BIG thing in sound"

Tiny speakers that weigh nothing, pumping out heart stopping bass?

An intelligent mixer, which 'hears' a mix, and adjusts full automatically?

I wonder what 5/6 k could buy you in 5 years?

PS, if anyone invents any of the above, it was MY idea so I want some royalties. :P

A solid solution for your budget would be the Soundlab G591E's 15" abs cabs retail about £150 a pair or the 12"s at around £110 a pair coupled with the budget C-Mark amp's (300w + 300w) nothing fancy very workman like but reliable (you can alway's upgrade the driver's when money allow's) if you added another £100 a Behringer ultracurve via E-bay would be within your reach

Don't be put off by the Soundlab label for the price they have a really punchy sound (15"s) and are 300w rms. I've got 12 of them that I use for hire (just take the badges off and no one is the wiser!) and not had a problem with any of them

hope this help's within the tight budget you have

Hi all!

Thanks for the advice again :) I have worked with MAC sound and at the end of the show one of them said about work experience, however I am away on tour the week that I have work experience. Which is real shame as I was looking forward to it.

I suppose it’s a bit like getting a new computer? You can buy the top of the range laptop now but in 6 months it’s out of date?

Also what’s a HND? And while on the subject I’m going to risk going of topic but what other options are available? My friend has a collage he has recommended to me but is there any other ways other than collage/uni? And is there any way I could do work experience in the summer? Or does it all have to be at time set by school?

Also I am going to save my money until I have a lot more (say 5/6k) because I have convinced my friend to buy some subs (anyone used these? Linky) and mics for his system so even if school say no I still have that. And looking back at all posts so far it seems like the far more sensible thing to do.

Thanks for the spell check. I’m going to have to go back to typing them out in word again! :P

Thanks

Tom

So your 15 and your touring already?

We have a section on the blue-room for this sort of question, you will be much better off asking your questions in there.

Also I am going to save my money until I have a lot more (say 5/6k) because I have convinced my friend to buy some subs (anyone used these? Linky)

I have a pair of those subs and they do the job, there nothing special but for the price I carnt complan.

and mics for his system

What kind of mics? There are litrally thousands of different makes and models of mics for all sorts of different aplications, the term mic is like the term car!

Thanks for the spell check. I’m going to have to go back to typing them out in word again! :P

There is a spell checker on blue-room, its the abc in the top right hand corner.

Hope this helps

sorry to throw this a little OT, but like I've been saying in the other thread, there's some gems in the tbone range, but there's also some stinkers. the CD55 mics I have are falling apart, the BD200 sounds a bit thin, but the EM800s and the SC600s I have are amazing!

Thanks for that.

I will pass it on. I had a feeling you were going to say that as I read it in another post. so the EM800s and the SC600s are the ones to go for then? I will try and convince him to look at other drum mics if yours are falling apart!

Thanks again

Tom
