Mystery lamp base

Pictured below is a lamp base (and the remains of one of the lamps that went into it)

It's come out of a Coemar versatile light. The base itself is knackered, won't hold a solid connection with the bulb.

Anyone seen one of these before? We've asked some of the usual suspects about it but with no success. I'm hoping it will be something really commonplace that I just haven't come across before...

What's the pitch between the pins - I'm guessing 9.5mm?

The give away is the HX185 which is the LIF part code, also known as GE product code 35232. It's a 800W 230v specialist projection lamp in a GX9.5 base.

Like this.

or this

These look pretty much like the ones we have in stock for our Coemar 'fan lights' (as we call them) - single bubble with 9 (I think) small lenses which throw out a fan of beams in an arc. They are rated at 1000W, but as I recall you can only get these bubbles at a max of 800W now.

I'll have a look when next I'm down on Thursday.

Stuart has his lamp base identified but a question for my clarification please.

The lamp base appears to be a GY9.5 as the right hand elongated pin hole appears to be the larger one in a GY9.5 which is a 500 or 650 watt lamp base. The interesting looking lamp appears to have two pins the same size so one assumes it would need a GX9.5 lamp base as 1K lamps have two pins the same diameter.

Went looking for clarification and Andy Cidor's article http://www.alia.com.au/techtopics/lamps.htm backs my thoughts.

Thanks Don

That sounds just like a Versatile light - always thought that was a stupid name since they only do one thing. However we're very keen on them - far less hassle than battens of pinspots for fan type effects.

The only drawback is how weird they look - fine for rock'n'roll but there are other situations where I would like to have used them but couldn't.

"Fan lights" is a descriptive enough name. One of our staff took his first look at them and christened them "alien heads" which seems to have stuck... B-)

Is this the wee beastie??

Ours are obviously in need of a good clean, but they don't see a lot of use.

I like them when we do use 'em though!

It is indeed.

On a side note, I really like the adjustments available on the bracket with the ball joints - very handy!

That's how they were when I acquired them! And yes, it gives them a certain je ne sais quoi when rigging. !!
