nick_field
I think this is one of those 'competent person' things. I guess pretty much anyone is competent to press a small red button But actually it's all the thought behind it that matters, marking the exclusion zones, keeping line of sight with the effect etc. These days I think the HSE 'X' series of risk management accreditations are becoming a lot more widespread, although probably still not common enough. I remember firing Ice Fountains and the like for am-dram productions when I was about 15. They were quite professional am-dram, mostly pro or ex-pro crew, so I don't think they would have got me to do it if it was actually illegal. Play safe kids!
