Hello,

To whoever this helps, we've had many issues with screenmonkey not displaying correctly with certian computers and hardware and have managed to find a fix that sorts the issues out and so far has worked on every machine that we have tested and runs smootly biggrin.gif

  1. Install the KLite Mega Codec Pack First
  2. When installing, select advanced setup on the first screen, and make sure "ffdshow" is selected for both dropdowns below named "Preferred Video Decoder" and "Preferred Audio Decoder"
  3. Install Screenmonkey
  4. Open Screenmonkey, right click on the "Dashboard" tab and select "List"
  5. Drag a video file into the cuestack, right click the video name and select "Video Options"
  6. Under Video Acceleration, select "Use Overlay for Hardware Combatability" and click "OK"
  7. Test the software and it should be working correctly

There seems to be little infomation on screenmonkey out there, but can be a useful free tool to use on small productions when needed. We found this fix by tweeking the options on various machines and hardware and these settings seemed to fix them all. rolleyes.gif

Hope this helps

Beware that the thread linked to is dated 2004, so only relevant to XP or earlier, & is basically saying "don't install this software; you should install what I recommend instead". Are the KLite codec packs he panned 16 years ago the same as the current ones still being updated a few days ago?

"When installing, select advanced setup on the first screen, and make sure "ffdshow" is selected for both dropdowns below named "Preferred Video Decoder" and "Preferred Audio Decoder""

The linked post points out that ffdshow is an open source project and is available as a standalone download from sourceforge. This is still completely true, with the caveat that ffdshow is currently unmaintained, and hasn't been updated since 0ct 2019.

"And it is not true that an up to date version of Windows will have all the media codecs you'd ever need"

True, but that's a Straw Man argument. It does not follow that you should use K-Lite.

When windows encounters a media format it doesn't have a codec installed for, it will search for one on windows update. A codec installed via windows update will get security patches.

It's safer that way, but do feel free to choose convenience over security .

I've not found that Windows Update works for codecs...

I'm not surprised.

Windows Update absolutely does do codecs;-

Microsoft's Codecs F.A.Q.

VLC plays just about everything you throw at it.

VLC

If it won't play, convert it to a known working format.

Handbrake.

I think you're missing the point of a media playback machine.

Being able to play a file in VLC does not help you if you are trying to play something in Screenmonkey. And re-encoding the video which the presenter hands you 2 minutes before they go onstage does not help you either. Having a machine with all known codecs already installed is invaluable in many situations. These machines are often not connected to the internet so the risk of installing "legacy" software (which surely Screenmonkey itself would also be) is quite small.
