DMX Loop thru

Hey hive mind....

 

Building a flightcase for a hazer that has data and power in/out on a panel on the rear.

 

Question is, with the data out can I just solder A link Between the Data In / Data Out then go Data In -> Hazer -> Fan

 

Or

 

Do I create a complete circuit, so Data In -> Hazer -> Fan -> Data Out

 

Same question for power...

As it’s such a short link then you’ll be fine for just linking between the sockets then taking a short tail to the circuit board. It’s how everything else is done :)

DMX will be ok if the link into the hazer is fairly short, it's not "best practice" but it will work fine.

Prob looking at 40 cm to the hazer then 1m to the fan

For over a metre I'd be inclined to loop it properly, personally. If it was 5-10cm I wouldn't worry, but 1.4m in total I'd do it "properly".

If you have the space available, could you include a small DMX splitter inside the flightcase? It might be overkill, but it guarantees you an isolated feed to the hazer.

You're effectively creating a short Y-split, which is not to DMX standards. You might get away with it - but for the sake of a short piece of cable and an XLR connector, why compromise?

 

Power-wise... if it was me, I'd have a panel on the back with a 16A in and out, and a separate breaker for each of the hazer and fan with appropriate distro internally.

Yes that is a bit long and would risk odd behaviour. Put in an active splitter or run a proper loop.
