3/8 tread tap

Hi All,

 

I need to cut a 3/8" female threaded hole in various materials including aluminium and birch ply wood in order to mount an article on a mic stand.

 

What type of tap would I require?

3/8" Whitworth. Now that hardware shops are a thing of the past you may need to shop around. CPC do a complete tap & die set for about £30.

Cutting a thread in plywood is unlikely to work, well.

 

For fixings INTO plywood, wood screws are almost certainly best. For fixings THROUGH plywood then consider a suitable bolt or machine screw with washer and nut on the back.

Or indeed at all (I missed the word plywood in the OP). For thick ply there are a variety of adaptors out there to mount things onto mic stands. For thin ply you could use a top-hat style 5/8" - 3/8" thread adaptor with a thin 5/8" mic-stand nut & a bit of glue.

have a look at T nuts, far easier for getting a thread into ply. you could try to tap the ply, but it wouldnt work very well, if at all

I've been looking for clarity all afternoon and you chaps (as usual) came up Donald's.

 

I've often tapped birch ply and it's worked pretty well, especially M8 and above. Obviously not for mission critical stuff but very handy never the less.

I would be (pleasantly) surprised to find T-nuts available in 3/8" BSW, rather than just metric sizes, but if you know a source..........

1/4" UNC for most cameras
