Dimmer leaves resteration

The dimmer leaves in our movers have paint peeling

off them presumably for heat protection.

 

I can't get replacement dimmer leaves.

Any thoughts on how to restore them?

Hi

You can remove the original coating and use ultra-high temperature spray paint.

The surfaces will have to be prepared to a very high standard first; i.e. completely free of oxides and grease before applying the paint in several thin layers. The stuff I'm thinking of (ProCote VHT) requires use of PPE. It's highly irritating to the lungs, skin and eyes and the propellant is a mix of acetone, isobutane, pentane and xylene, which can form explosive mixtures with air, in the right concentration.

There are companies out there that can do it for you, if you don't fancy trying it yourself.

The other option is for you to send them away to be professionally powder-coated.

If the leaves are aluminium then you might find it difficult to get the paint to stick. Aluminium is notorious in this regard. The UV from the lamp doesn't help either. If you can get them spotlessly clean you could try anodizing them black.

It's not worth the trouble in my opinion, it makes very little difference to the performance of the fixture. You get very slight hazing on gobo edges as you dim out due to internal reflections.

Will powder coating stand up to the high temperatures and UV light inside a moving light?
