X32 Compact routing

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have 16 mics and a stereo backing track that need to come out of an X32 compact, problem is I need them all on faders in front of me so I can run the show live... I figure channels 1-8 is straight, 9-16 is VCA single to single, but I'm stuck with my Aux in stereo channel! I would probably like it to be on the Master fader, but obviously don't want all the mics on that... Matrix sends? I've not had time to play on it physically yet but if anyone has any ideas they would be welcome as I need to sort it for next week, cheers, Joe.

I might be mistaken but is there a thing you can do with the X32 compact where you hold one page button, and press the next, and can cascade 16 input faders across the master section without doing 1-1 VCA?

It might not be the compact but I thought there was something in the range that did that.

As for the 17th fader for the backing track, you'll not get a 17th and you haven't got any encoders on the assignable section, but you could keep the aux channel selected on the console and mix it by either adjusting the bus level encoder, or via an encoder for bus level on the screen.

I would be programming DCAs in that scenario to bring groups and individuals together under a small number of faders - it's a much easier way to operate as the channels you need access to at any particular time are right under your fingers.

Alternatively, there is a way of using the master fader as essentially another DCA so that fader can control your backing track rather than the master level. I must confess I don't know the exact process but James Holt's rather excellent X32TC software can set it up for you. And do all your DCA programming really easily ;)

Yes, that feature is there for the Compact and you activate it as you say: Hold 1-8 and press 9-16 on the buttons down the LHS of the desk - works with lots of combinations I believe.

As Shez says, a grouping of some inputs onto DCAs would seem more likely to support that number of inputs.

I'm not aware you can repurpose the master fader as anything else unless as Shez suggests there's some cheeky software utility to do it!

I believe X32TC sets the LR routing to pre-fade rather than post so it doesn't affect the output level and then re-routes any level changes made by that fader to whatever other channels you want it to control instead. It'll only work whilst that software is connected to the desk.

That's exactly what the LR fader ganging feature does :) (the idea essentially came from "how can I make this fader useless on the console so I can copy its value to other stuff")

If you'd just like to use X32TC to remap the LR fader you could set up a show with no DCAs and no channels under X32TC control, configure the LR fader gang in advanced console setup, and connect it to your console. But if you have some preparation time I'd echo Shez's recommendation of programming the show on DCAs - even if the only benefit is combining some of the ensembles onto single DCAs, it's a lot easier than trying to wrestle 16 (+track) faders during a show.

For me I'd rather have 16 faders on the top page, than have 8 faders on each page and 8 DCAs. Personally I don't think 16 faders is that many to wrangle - plus if they're all vocals or similar there might not be any obvious grouping.

One of my complaints about the X32 full sized is that on the top layer you've got 16 faders and 8 fixed masters - one per every two faders - but that's from a LS9 / M7CL previous desk where it was much more fader than group heavy.

I think I've cracked it: 1-16 on top (neat trick, thanks for the tip!) minus LR send, instead all to a stereo bus, (say 9/10) then buses 9/10 to stereo Matrix 1/2. Stereo Aux (Track) to LR, (as default) then LR to Matrix 1/2. Matrix 1/2 to Output 1/2. Seems to work with two iPods; one in channel and one in aux, will try for real with mics next week!

Can’t you change the 8 masters to inputs (say) 17-24?

Not on the full sized console as far as I'm aware, it's only a feature on the 8-channels per page consoles.

That sounds like it would work, one other thought I had which not as flexible is with your Assign keys you could preset a few backing track levels via Snippets and recall them as well - you could have buttons for 0dB, -6, -12 and off etc with a set fade time.

Mute groups are still there on the top level as well if anything can be done via a simple on/off eg reverb between songs
