revbobuk
Guys - I'm using a dedicated Cat5 line to route DMX data to a lighting bar, and I just wondered if there were any accepted wiring conventions for the Cat5 part - One website seems to suggest that using the orange pair for Data + and -, and the brown pair for Ground is normal - but is that the case? It's a fixed link, so no disconnect/robustness issues.
timsabre
Yes, that is normal - DMX+ on pin 1 (or/wh), DMX- on pin 2 (or), GND on pin 8 (Brown)
alistermorton
That's what we use.
maeterlinck
As said - that is the standard and what is written in the standard for this. Second pair is also defined in the standard. Some companies like Colour Kinetics use different ones.
alistermorton
The document at ETC website recommends that even where only a single channel is in use the two grounds should be wired to be at the same potential.
revbobuk
That's pretty conclusive! Thanks all.
neilwf
I followed the advice on the ETC website. It works fine! I've successfully sent two universes down one CAT5 cable.
