natjones
Hello all Our stage is covered in 3mm oil tempered hardboard. It's mostly been absolutely fine since being laid in 2013 (by an external company), but about a year ago, some really shiny patches started appearing and lifting the paint in chunks, and now it's an epidemic making most of our stage super flaky and unappealing. We've tried sanding small sections; we've tried using PVA solution; the shiny patches just return and grow. A production manager friend at another venue has reported the same thing happening to him. We've only ever used black emulsion (Mylands from Flints), so we don't really know why this is happening. We're planning on re-covering the floor, but we don't want this to happen again. Has the recipe for the paint changed when the tins changed from plastic to metal? Should we be putting down some other treatment before painting it?Any advice welcome! Jevans
How often do you repaint? We use Flints Black on 6mm oil tempered hardboard and find that the paint just comes up when you take up gaffer tape etc. faster than it does anything else - though we repaint every couple of weeks. We did mix PVA glue into the first couple of layers when we had the stage retopped last year.
Junior8
Is it possible that the tempering process has not been perfect in this batch and some of the oil is somehow leaching out under the compression of foot traffic? This would perhaps make any non sealed un primed emulsion lift.
natjones
We repaint every couple of months with Mylands matt black from Flints - it's used primarily as a teaching space, so there is a lot of foot traffic. It was primed when it was installed, but we were wondering if the building company used some sort of treatment that has lead to the shiny patches. It was doing a very good job of staying put (even when lifting tape) until about a year ago. Apart from PVA, are then any primers that anyone could recommend? themadhippy
Are you taking it back to bare wood each time or just adding another layer of paint on top of another?
