Owain
For on-shore use Raynet (Radio Amateurs’ Emergency Network) recommend Anderson PowerPoles http://www.raynet-uk.net/technical/powercon.htm Weather resistant panel mount connectors are available in the US; I don't know if the UK importers stock them http://www.powerwerx.com/powerpole-accessories/panelpole-powerpole-panel-mount-weather-resistant.html http://www.torberry.co.uk/product-information.php
emsgeorge
Just to add from my first post - our powercon and speakon peli cases have been going strong for about 4 years. Almost every weekend, with lots of rain, dirt, and sheep trying to nibble on the damn cables !!. Just mount on the side, so cases can be stacked on top of each other and then connected. I've got 2 speakon sockets on each battery case, so we can parallel them by just adding more. Inline fuses etc are all inside the batt case. Want to upgrade to the SLR series (which are now 1u high, not like the old 4u high repeaters), and you can easily get 5 in a peli case. We can run out a complete capacity plus mototrbo system in 2 cases (one batt one repeaters), a few antennas, and some tripods, in a matter of mins. TomHoward
The Polepole is inherently very open and requires a boot - it's not a bad connector but seems more suited to higher current application. I have them fitted between van and auxiliary battery in something like the 150Amp version - booted up it may suit but to be honest by the time you've weather proofed it you might as well have just used terminal block. It's a very clever connector the way it's gender less though, and fit together in a 180 degree rotation so the mating is always polarised the same. Took me a while to work out until I saw it in the flesh.
paulears
George - that's good enough for me, I think. Powercon and Speakons it is. Thanks.
Lamplighter
I've also used speakons as the 12v supply connectors for repeater systems, particularly water authority tunnel inspection systems. They survived well for many years, used in the most incredible wet, muddy places that you could imagine. Also used them for the generator connections for several hot air ballon gondolas, transatlantic and roud the world with 100% reliability.Brian
dmxlights
I am also up to something with 12v battery packs and have been looking at these http://cpcireland.farnell.com/wieland-electric/96-031-5053-1/socket-3pole-20a-appliance-m25/dp/CN19869 I know D holes are 24mm and these are 25mm I am thinking of going down this route as my battery packs will be used with some led flat panels I have to power them when there is no mains or in part of the room where there is no mains power to save runing power leads The conectors l link to are IP66 and IP68 rated
paulears
we're finding more and more handy connectors now - I've got lots of tips now!
Tom_M
I'm using Powercon True One on some kit for the military they are IP65 when mated. As well as rated for live connect and disconnect. The military haven't managed to break them (yet) after a year of using them in the field.
